I have been offered a 4 cylinder english diesel
MF 35 tractor but also I have been told that they are really hard to start. Is there anything that can be done to improve this? If so, I will buy it. I am a Case man and don`t know much about MF.Thanks.

I have a MF35 4cyl diesel and its a right pain to start have just drilled out the combustion chambers in a spare head I had, have been told this cures them, to drill holes for 4 heater plugs is quite a tricky job as where you have to drill is surrounded by water jackets in the head. make sure it doesent have them already as MF made after market heads with them fitted.

try fitting a ford [arghhh!] 5000 diesel starter motor. it spins faster and seems to work fine, but you still good compression and heater plug

Thanks to all of you. Very interesting comments. I want the tactor just to restore and drive it. I think will buy it and try to install heating plugs in the cylinder head. By the way, down here(Mexico) the weather is pretty mild, never below zero C.

I have heard that these engines were poor starting even in 80 degree weather. I wonder if a block heater would cure the problem. It sure does in the 3 cyl. perkins even with the thermo start not working. Rick.

The Standard 23C engine was a poor starter from day one. There are stories of tractors being towed round the factory to get them to start! I"ve found that with some heavy oil and good liners they will go with about 20 seconds heat. There are two mods which can be performed to the head to improve starting. One is to drill in and fit glow plugs to the cylinders. The other is to drill a 1/8" hole in the combustion chamber directly under the injector. This has the effect of giving direct injection on startup, so starts easier.

It depends upon what you want to do with the tractor. If you plan a lot of field work, the Standard engine should work fine, as they are reputed to be a very durable and economical engine, once running.

After spending too many winters trying to start an International B414 diesel, though, I wouldn't buy a tractor with a Standard diesel to drive a snowblower.

Most hard-to-start tractors are usually a problem within the tractor itself I would say, and not a problem within that particular model of tractor. If a diesel is timed correctly, the injectors are working properly, the engine has good compression, and the battery is charged up from an efficient charging system, it should be as easy to start as most others. For example, many guys have problems starting their 6 volt gas tractors and they jump to a 12-volt conversion to crank it over quicker thinking that is the problem when it is usually something else (fuel system, compression, ignition, etc) within the tractor.

Hi,
My experience of 4-cyl 35's is that as long as the compression is about 100% they will start OK. Once the compression starts to fall that is when problems occur. Not sure about the earlier suggestions but I would certainly think twice about it particularly if you are living in a cold climate. 'Laughing gas' may help but it is certainly not the answer.

DavidP
