I have a remote farm about 15 miles from my home. There are some existing grain bins there but no electricity. I keep an old MF 175 there to run augers and plow snow etc. When it is much below 30 degrees the old Perkins doesn't like to start. I don't like using ether and there is no electricity there for a block heater. I have heard of some device called a thermostart which was used on some Massey and Ford tractors. Where can I find one of these thermostart kits and do they really work? My understanding is that they are some type of heating element in the intake manifold that warms the air in the intake. Any advice or experience with this device would be welcomed.

That is what you have but it should have a small reservoir the return lines flow through. This is so it has enough fuel to heat the air as it goes through the intake manifold.

The 23C diesel early models had them prior to the glow plugs. Like someone else stated easy to find on the web around 12-15$. Just need to tap into the fuel lines some where and hook it to a switch from the battery. Great idea for your promblem. I use a little either sometimes. Don't get that cold here though south Fla.

The only place I have found the bleed off line reservoir for those is BareCO the heater nozzle can be found several places on the Internet. They were used on the tractor with the regular injection Perkins engine in them. The early MF35 MF50 and the MF65 had them. I have installed several of them on the Direct Injection engine through the years they work pretty well. I have a sketch of how they are connected and it tells how they work. Send me an Email address and I will email it to you if you would like to have it.

The Super 90 diesel used them. It screwed into the intake manifold. It did help the starting when it was cold.

Never heard of thermostart, but loggers/road construction workers sometimes use engine coolant transfer from one vehicle to gradually heat engine in another.
