I bought a 65 Massey with G176 gas engine. It had not run for over a year, suspected motor was shot. Upon pulling it apart, found It had dropped a valve down onto the piston. So replaced sleeve, piston, rings, two bent pushrods and had entire head rebuilt. Everything else appeared good as engine was supposedly rebuilt 50 hours before this. So now I"m trying to start it. Has lots of spark at each plug.Checked and double checked firing order. It spins like crazy but dosent fire..until I pull the choke, then BANG! backfires. Sometimes up through the oil bath, otherwise just a back fire. Had the carb off 3 times, seems clean, float may be sticking at times slightly, but keep thinking it should fire or start a little bit anyway. Would the timing have got out? Or am I missing something else?

Sounds like timing is off and or a broken cam drive gear maybe.

What Old said. Did you check the rotation of the dist?

rotor turning counter clockwise when viewed from above. All valves are opening and closing properly, tappets set cold.

Rotate engine by hand until #1 intake valve closes, place zip tie into cylinder through spark plug hole, advance engine until piston can be felt at TDC, remove distributor cap and see where rotor button is pointed. Remember distributor goes 1/2 as fast as crank leaving room for an engine to be perfectly 180 degrees out.

Ok, When I follow your steps, it appears the rotor is pointing at #3, when #1 is TDC with intake valve closed. soooif I was to move all my plug wires ahead one step it should be close?

Move them 180, so the rotor is pointing at the #1 wire when #1 is at TDC. Another thing to make sure is that it is the compression stroke, not the exhaust stroke. To check this on my Ollie 1600 this summer when I was trouble shooting, I found a rubber plug that fit tightly into the spark plug hole. I then cranked it until it shot out(yes, it can be VERY loud if inside a building) At that point, I was just a little past TDC, but close enough to see that the wires were a little off. I rearranged the wires, and she fired up on the first crank. I still had to adjust the timing (by ear) by turning the dist., but now it runs really strong.
