MF165 Multi-Power Inop?

I'm looking at buying this MF165, but the Multi-Power does NOTHING when switched. The tractor seems to run great but not the MP. I can't tell if it's stuck in hi or lo or whatever. The lever seems to do nothing. It also seems like it has an independent PTO. I don't have an implement to hook up to the PTO to test for "torque" or loading down, I can only see the PTO spline spinning. I'm assuming the I-PTO is hydraulic driven. Are there a couple quick tests, I can perform on the PTO and Multi-power before I buy it? Thanks!

First, the PTO. It is gear driven, has three positions, out of gear, engine PTO and Ground PTO. Shift lever is down on the left side of gear case. The PTO is driven by a secondary chutch, operated by the same pedal that operates the primary clutch. Two stage clutch, down approx. 2/3 way stops tractor, down all the way should stop PTO (if the clutch is adjusted and working properly. Really need to hook to a load to assess the clutch.
Second, the Multi-power. To determine whether it's in low or high, pull up against a grade and depress the clutch. If the tractor rolls backward, it's either in low range, or completely inoperable. If the tractor gearbox seems to lock, and the tractor does not drift backwards, then that's good news. It's stuck in High range, it is operational, and only needs shift linkage adjusted. This multi-power transmission pulls in low range but free-wheels or coasts with no engine braking. Dangerous in hilly terain. In high range it is a solid transmission, both pulling and holding back(engine braking) and has the additional feature of a "hill-holder" or reverse sprag clutch. I've never found this feature very useful, but that's how it works.
If you find out that it is not working, which I'm inclined to think from your description, repair can get really expensive. One option is to tear the transmission down and "Weld" two gears together, making it a standard 6-speed, and defeating the multi-power. My advise is to either buy it for a song, or look for another tractor. To repair it correctly could cost in excess of $3,000. Hope this helps. Good luck, Mark

Well folks... I bought it!

Thanks Mark for the testing MP advise. Yes the Multi-Power is stuck in High, the "hill-climb" feature works....

But, how would you shift "out of gear" while on a grade? The hill-climb feature works so well, I can only go forward and not reverse and can't get out of gear while on an incline? Is this normal?

I hope to bring the "girl" home today or tomorrow.

Thanks again.
John

Hi Mark,

I have a MF135 with the two-stage clutch and know what you mean... But this is an independent PTO, no "ground speed" position. You can engage or disengage the PTO just by moving the lever and no clutching. That's why I was wondering if it was hydraulic driven and tied in with the Multi-power section.

I really love the Perkins' engine and Massey's but the hydraulics being inside the transmission causing tractor splitting is not my cup of tea... The other tractor manufacturers are not like this are they? (I mean they have mostly engine mounted pumps...)

I'll test drive this again with your suggestions... but everyone I've talked to, told me to stay away from the Multi-power unless I love spending money for repairs. We'll see....

I have a MF-165 that has no multi power which is great never have any problems. I have a MF-180 which i love but it does have multi power and any problem i have had has to do with the multi-power. THe indepentant pto does run off the hydraulic pump as does the multi power.. there are two pumps a gear pump on top of the piston pump. My multi power went i had to replace the top pump $900 for the pump plus the work. plus splitting the multi power MF's is a pain with the tube for the multi power being up in the next section where u split it. Getting it off is hard enough putting it back on is even worse. I have had my 180 apart about 4 times.
