I just bought this tractor. After about 15 min. of using the clutch to shuttle back and forth and operate the hydraulic pump it will no longer release when the clutch pedal is depressed. With the pedal pressed all the way down the clutch continues to drag and I can not shift in or out of gear. If I let it sit and idle in neutral for about 4-5 min. it will operate okay for a few more minutes and then have the same problem all over again. What is the fix for this problem?

Hi,
Is there any evidence of oil leaking from the splitpin under the clitch housing?
It sounds as if the linings on the clutch plate have a sticky film on them which will cause a drag. Plates can be cleaned but if oil has penetrated the lining it will come back to the surface and you'll be no better off. Another possibility is the clutch plate sticking on the shaft maybe due to prolonged lack of use.
The operation can be viewed through the belly plate (engine stopped). Have an assistant press the pedal and you will see the pressure plate move rearwards approx 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch in the first stage and a further similar distance in the second stage if you have a dual clutch fitted. Whatever the problem is it is not much short of splitting to investigate and rectify.

Thanks for your reply.
No, there are no visible oil leaks.
When the tractor is cold I have no problems with the transmission or clutch. Problem only occurs when I use the clutch for several minutes to reverse direction or use the clutch to engage the oil pump to operate the front-end loader. Operating the front-end loader with the transmission in gear and the clutch depressed thru stage one seems to cause the problem to occur most rapidly. To me it seems like the problem is heat related because if I shut the tractor off or let it idle in neutral with the clutch let out for about 5 minutes the clutch will operate normally again for a few minutes. When it is acting up the clutch drags enough to drive the tractor forward or backward with the clutch fully depressed to the floor boards.

Does this information give you any additional ideas?

Thanks.

Hello again,
I don't think that heat is an issue here. From your latest, I am wondering whether you have a broken clutch plate lining. Is it possible to see the clutch unit from underneath with your loader fitted? If you can, you will see the three PTO plate adjuster bolts equally spaced around the housing. Have an assistant press the pedal and note the anount of movement of the pressure plate through the first stage and into the second. Turn the flywheel to the next adjuster and note the movement and then the third. ALl should be equal. If one of two have no or negligible movement then you may have a piece of lining come loose and effectively giving you a 'double thickness' lining on the one side.
Cheers

David,

Again, thanks for the info. If a disk pad is broken or loose wouldn't my problem occur all the time? The problem only occurs after I have been using the tractor for several minutes. Yesterday I used the tractor to plow snow with my back-blade. I made a point of only using the clutch to shift the transmission. I ran the lift for my back-blade with the clutch fully engaged. The clutch functioned normally for about 30 minutes before it became difficult to shift. I shut the tractor off for about 45 minutes while I installed a new block heater. When I restarted it the clutch was fine.

The front loader frame passes beneath the bell housing and obstructs my view of the clutch. I have not tried to readjust the clutch because I did not have a manual that listed the dimensions for free pedal travel. I now have a manual and will check the pedal travel this weekend. I hope to find that the clutch is misadjusted and the throw-out bearing is putting force on the pressure plate which in turn is causing the disks to slip against the flywheel. I'll let you know what I find.

Keeping the faith,

Larry
