I just bought a massey ferguson 2135 with the 3cyl. diesel engine from the local golf course. I has been setting in a field for over seven years. They stoped useing it because it had a flat rear tire but running. I bought it for near nothing but found that the injector pump needs rebuilding. Setting up as long as it did probably gumed up the insides of the pump. Something happended to the power steering and they took the hoses off. I'm not even sure if it has power steering. Is the power steering unit on the sterring shaft? It has a small box under the steering wheel that has two hydrulic fittings that someone put greese fittings in one and caped the other. It has a hydraulic pump on the right side of the engine so it should have some kind of power steering. When they took the hoses off they took the drive gear off of the pump. The pump was locked up but only because trash had gotten in the gears inside the pump. I can't find a drive gear for this pump but I guess I could have one made. The tractor may not be worth fixing up. It has 9200 hours on it and the hood and grill are missing and it needs a 18.4x16.1 rear tire. thats going to cost but it was so cheap that I could not turn her down. The engine turns over and appears to be in decent shape as far as I can tell but i am sure it uses oil whith as much time as it has on it. I think I could sell it for scrap and get my money for it if it's not worth fixing up. I think I will have about $1700 in it if i replace the hood and grill provided I do not need to overhaul the engine and nothing else major is wrong. but at the rate that I am finding problems that doesen't seem likely. I am new at tractors and diesels and any advice would be appreiacted. thanks, Nick

Are you sure the injector pump needs a rebuild? I bought a lincoln (perkins powered) welder that was to be scrapped and the lift pump and filters needed replacement - full of gungy water. You can get a kit for the lift pump for a few dollars and it is not hard to fit. The injector pump was oK as it was protected by the filters and the gummed up lift pump. Make sure you are getting fuel to the injector pump before calling it stuffed. My experience is with MF135 but a Perkins is a Perkins and the MF135 is easy to get cheap generic parts for. check the bareco site and Big Dean Austin"s site for more help.

I went to the rebuilder today and they said it would cost about $525 to rebuild the injector pump. Does that sound reasonable? About how much would spookane charge? I looked over the tractor as best as I could and as far as I can tell, without it running, everything seems to be OK. I drained the oil in the engine and it looked good. no water or metal but it was overfull probably with diesel from the injector pump. The transmission had water in it but it was not run like this. Someone took the overflow cover off the right side and it rained in it. The raidator might be leeking, it is in perty bad shape, but I don't see any signs of leaks but if there was any they were probably washed away long ago. the brakes seem to be working. Any more major things I overlooked before I spend big money?
Thanks,
Nick

Thanks for the help. The injector pump is defently bad. The lift pump is working and I put new fuel filters on it. I bled the injector pump three times and when cracked the injector lines and cranked the engine no fuel driped from the fittings. I am going to look over the tractor good before I spend the money to get the pump rebuilt. I will keep yall posted on what I do with it. I think I will go to the local injector service friday and see about how much it will cost me to get the pump rebuilt. Thanks for the help,
Nick

I think at this point, I would take an inventory of usable parts , price them, and see which way you come out ahead. Diesels can be very pricey if you start getting into injection pumps etc.

Based on past experience I can recommend Spokane Diesel, Spokane Washington, to rebuild the CAV pump and injectors. They're on the net.

Hi,
From what you say the tractor may well have come to the end of its life. Even with the best will in the world, if you have to start throwing major bucks at it just to get it going then its not going to be a bargain. I would suggest a lot of stripping first to see if its worth it.

You can get the grill, hood, and nose cone from eBay pretty cheap. I believe the PS pumps were sold as a unit, no parts. The value of the tractor is between $4500-7000 local.
