Does anyone know the pto speed rating? I want to hook up a JD Mower Conditioner that uses a 540 rpm pto input.

Exactly. If you don't want to run at full throttle due to noise, field conditions or some other factor, you'll have to drop a gear. When doing something like this without live or independent PTO, it can be beneficial to run a little slower in ground speed so the machine and tractor can cope if you hit a tough spot. Remember when you hit the clutch, it all stops.

William

You are safe. 44's are rated for 540 rpm, at the pto

What is the correct engine speed? Is the pto supposed to stay engaged on the first pary of the clutch? Or maybr they don't have a double clutch? I am having trouble with the clutch and I'm not sure if I should split the tractor and repair it. Thanks for the info.

Wind her up all the way. You get PTO at full throttle. Ordinary 44's had transmission PTO's and the ones that had live power got it with a separate hand clutch, no two stage foot clutches in them

Your right, it is a transmission pto, only one drive shaft.
I turned it by hand and got a 2.5 : 1 ratio. I would assume that the engine governor should be set at 1350 RPM to yield 540 on th PTO. Does this sound about right?

You are correct. the pto is a 2.5 to 1 ratio from the engine. your engine should free rev 1500rpm, producing 600rpm at the pto. the h260 is rated at 1350 rpm/540 pto. for a lot of jobs, you can run at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, saving fuel and noise!
