Hi everbody, I've got a two questions - I recently picked up a MF brocure from the late 60s-early 70's for the Western Style 1100,1130. In the booklet it mentions pressure control. What is it? The diagram says its a special prong like hitch that uses a comination of draft and response control. I've never been around any of the big One thousand series MFs, but my curiosity was stoked by a 1130 I saw with one on AGCOs machine finder service. Was it any good? I'm assuming since it was a proprietary type hitch it never really caught on. None the less, if anybody has an information I would appreciate it if you were to share.

Everybody's response has been interesting - I've got a 135 at home, so from what DavidP mentioned, they were fitted with this device as well? Thanks, everybody for your response. I might actually try and hunt one of those things down for the 100 series. It would be interesting to try anyways on a 135...

I have a 1969 ll30 with the pressure control hitch assembly. I purchased the tractor with a 52 disc with the PC style drawbar. The system was nicknamed the big stick because it literally acted as a lever transfering the front weight of the tractor to the rear axle. That combination worked great. The down side of the system was the drawbar for normal use was also connected to the lower link arms. When used as the main tractor that was a pain, but now using it for utility work is a different story. It is great to control the height of the drawbar from the tractor seat as I hook up and move implements very easily.

MF Pressure Control Hitch Pictures in reply to Christos, 12-07-2005 23:23:29
My Uncle has one that I believe came with an MF180.

I borrowed it and displayed it in a local antique tractor show. I wasn't 100% sure how to kook it up, so it may not be set up right. But I took some pics of it on a TO-35.

I know the TO-35 wasn't set up to use this, but that's all I had to put it on for display. But here are a couple of pics:

The describtion and explanation of how it works from DavidP is very good but that hitch was used on the MF 180 and similar size tractors, the 1100 and 1130 used a different PC hitch. Although it tried to do the same thing, it used a special stiff tongue attachment on the implement which used a prong that poked in a drawbar receptacle attachment that was fitted in place of regular drawbar which attached to lift cylinders used on hitch arms. With the stiff tongue the hitch pryed up on the weight of the implement and transfered it to the tractor. Good idea for small tractors, not a very good working idea for large tractors. We used to have the swing chain type that came with the M F 180 but I have no idea what ever happened to it. It was hard on tongues. I had forgotten about these PC hitches, sure would be a conversation piece at a tractor show.

Do you know the swinging arm hitch assembly part number for the swinging arm catI-II convertible weight transfer hitch designed for 150-180 tractors? Does Massey still sell it?

Used carefully with an appropriately weighted tractor, the practical effect of its use with a reinforced tongue was to turn a 150 into a 175 - just slower. Our hitch disappeared and I would like to replace it. The dealers I have asked have never heard of it.

Our MF 1100 came with a pressure control hitch as described by David, as standard equipment (It came with a full st of front weights too, not bad for 1969!) Suffice to say, we never used it as we had no big trailed implements for the tractor, only mounted plows, cultivators etc.

Hi Christos,
The pressure control coupler was a wonderful device that never caught on largely due to the introduction of larger and four wheel drive tractors.
The yoke is attached to the lower lift arms and has a central arm which will allow movement to each side. The idea was to use the tractor's hydraulics to add weight to the rear wheels and thus improve traction. 4WD developments overtook it and sadly it died a death. The coupler was only suitable for MF tractors fitted with Pressure Control. This is an additional part of the inner quadrant. As you raise the control lever on 'other' tractors you get full lift pressure. With PC the pressure can be varied from approximately 500 psi to the full 3000psi therefore allowing you to vary the amount of extra weight placed on the back wheels.
The chain was placed through a guide eye welded on top or below the drawbar of the trailed implement or trailer up to a maximum of 24 inches rearwards from the vertical hanging point of the chain. A small tractor (135/165) fitted with PC would outpull a larger tractor in most conditions. Not only was it good for pulling but it improved the braking efficiency as well.
Regards
DavidP

Re: MF Pressure Control Hitch A warning! in reply to DavidP, South Wales, 12-08-2005 13:18:46
Hi Christos
Dad and myself had a MF 178 fitted with a pressure control hitch about 25 years ago. it was a great device in tough ground when pulling a trailed oneway plough, it saved a lot of tyre wear due to wheel slip.
The only time I had any problems using the hitch, I was turning down a very steep bank at the end of the paddock and the pump pickup ran out of oil, being a multipower model, the tractor didnt hold back in the high position as the clutch pack had released and the load on the back wheels was also released with the hoist being without oil letting the tractor slide with the oneway plough pushing it, all I could do was steer it untill the plough started to bite again, the cure for this problem was to overfill the transmission untill oil came out of the dipstick hole. Cheers Arthur from Tassy
