Should I buy a MF-50 for $4K?

The tractor has under 4K hours, 85% or more on tires, all original, perfect sheet metal, good paint. It is gas - I assume the Z134 engine but I need to check. There is some minor denting on fenders - but none on the grills, hood, etc. Steering wheel has some cracking. The tractor has been kept indoors and been used mainly for mowing.

I would use it for mowing. Have been looking for a 35 or 135 for $3500 or less but have found nothing in this good of condition. It doesn't even need repainted - just a little cleaning.

Also - what exactly is the difference between the 35 and 50? I always assumed the 50 had a larger engine, more power, etc., but it appears to have the same engine as the 35.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Kerry

Thanks for all the replies - the information helped me immensely. We agreed to $3800. On the plus side, it had PS and live power and a new battery. On the minus side there was a patch to a rim and the fenders had a few more dents (all minor) than I remembered. The compression was high on 3 cylinders and a bit lower on the 4th. Since we were using a press-on guage, I'm not sure that we got a good reading. I'm going to test again with a screw-on guage. The 3-point hitch works well - but it was a tiny bit "jerky" lifting an 84" mower. It held it fine after I turned the engine off.

The weather was cold - 23 degrees - but it started with a little bit of choking and ran smoothly except for an occasional miss. The carburetor hasn't been touched in who-knows-when and is need of a cleaning and tune-up. The plugs were dirty and worn. The distributer was in good shape. I think addressing the carb and the plugs will smooth out the slight miss.

I bought it from a reputable dealer who took it in on a trade and knew the previous owner. He said the previous owner used it primarily for mowing. It does not appear to have been overhauled in the past - all of the engine components look original except perhaps the exhaust.

In any event, it's at home and in the barn. I'll piddle with it this winter and start mowing in the spring. Thanks again for all the advice. Kerry

You have bought a great tractor. I have a 1962 MF 50 Diesel and it has proven to be a very reliable - knock on wood.

You should search this site for additional info about the MF50, find Big Dean"s web site and get yourself a set of manuals, owners, parts and service. Money well spent IMHO.

I think an 84" mower would cause my 50 to jerk lifting too! Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think the hp for the gas version of the MF50 is about 32ish. FWIW, it"s 38 for the diesel.

Good luck,
Bill

Hi, The three most important questions are:
1) condition - that has been addressed already
2) Does it have power steering - big factor!
3) Does it have live power? - even bigger factor!
I am always wondering when reading these discussions where people are located. It has a bearing on many things including values. I beleive $4K is a fair price for a good original MF50 with live power. They are good tractors.

Condition is VERY important. You could buy a cheaper tracter and then sink several thousand $ in it in a heartbeat. I would buy it.

The MF 50 is almost the exact same tractor as a MF 35. The difference is the front axle and it's mounting, the fuel tank is bigger, and the sheet metal is different to accomodate that larger fuel tank. The heavier front end has better mounting for a loader, as well as providing a mounting point for cultivators. The MF 50 is essentially a row-crop/utility, where the 35 is just a utility. The 50 was also available with 38" rear wheels, and a tricycle front end or wide front. Good ol' tractors! In good shape they frequently sell for WAY over $4000

It has spin out wheels and one of the rear tires is new - the other rear tire is nearly new. Thanks.

Anyone else have an opinion? Thanks again.

The price is pretty steep.

But MF50s are fairly rare around here, and it"s in good condition.

I"d stay after the guy, but offer him a lower price.

My brother paid $4K for his 1958 Massey 50. The price is right for the condition you described, if not a little low. I have seen many going for $45-4800.

Do you know the seller? How long has he owned it? Some of the best looking tractors are the worst deals. Good luck Lou

I bought a canadian 1959 MF 50 for 4400.00 with a loader on it. I had to replace the manifold assy.,rebuild the carb, convert to alternator, buy replacement front wheel hubs, install a new exhaust system and I am still not done yet1 BUT, I also have a 56 F40 ferguson which is about the same tractor with no loader,I bought it for 5000.00 in a 90 percent restored condition. These tractors are GOLD in my book. Buy em, fix em right and keep em forever! send me an email and i will send you a few pics.
