I have a MF 165, Perkins diesel, the AD4-203 engine. My cousin also... very good tractors. Excellent engine.
60 horsepower, long stroke, 3.6" bore, 5" stroke. Lots of good torque.

As mentioned earlier, the steering on these tractors are a trouble, mainly because no one wanted to go through the trouble of putting grease in the joints and bushings on the steering parts. This is a steering with many bushings, and many joints, so every slack ads up and give a lot. That is why lubrication on these ones are so important. I think my book says it has to be done every 10 hour, and I guess if the farmers did it every 100 hour it would have been the most. And then the tractors suffers and they get a bad reputation.

Except this, the MF 165 is the best of these tractors, because it has the strongest transmission and rear end compared to the horsepower. Hydraulics demand new oil and for you to clean the hyd. pump filter now and then. Or, to be specific, do it by the book.

In a few words: Massey Ferguson 165 - Excellent tractor.

The s/n shows it to be built in 1966. That
late of s/n would most likely been actually
sold in 1967. The 165 is a great tractor.
One drawback would be a small output hyd.
pump if you are putting a loader on it.
The Continental engine is great but a little
hard to get some parts from MF but most avail
thru other sources. The drive train holds up
well due to the reduction boxes on the end
of the axle housings. Chuck.

Chuck,
I have to correct you on one point. The diesel engine in his tractor is a perkins, not a continental engine. The continental engine was the gas engine in a 165.

Thanks for the engine correction. The original
question didn't state the engine but the SDW in the s/n said it all. Thanks again. Chuck

hi Doug,we had a couple of 165's when i was a kid,the only complaint my dad had about them was that they wobbled on the road.he fixed it by tying tire tubes from the tie rod ends to the center of the tractor.if you get it tight,it will help.other than that,he liked them alot.
