I just recently moved back home and I'm in the process of restoring my fathers 1955? T0-35. I want to change it to a 12volt system. My problem is that it appears the tachometer is run of the alternator. I'm assuming this will cause the tachometer to function incorrectly if at all. Is there a solution to this problem. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

You could go with a generator off a 100 series model like a 135 or 165. They have the tach drive on the back. I'm not sure if the 35's, 65's etc had 6 volt or 12 volt systems, but if they are 12 volt you could use one of those too. I would stay away from an alternator unless you don't want the tach anymore.

first - do you have a 6 volt alternator or generator?

If you have a 6 volt alternator, just get a 12 volt alternator with the rear of the shaft threaded for the tach drive. I got one from the local MF dealer.

If you have a 6 volt generator, get the 12 volt alternator with the back threaded for the tach drive. Use the tach drive from the generator on the alternator.

Additionally I usually use the pulley from the original generator so the belt fits the pulley.

I remember seeing an MF245 with a Z145 engine with a 12 volt alternator, and the tach was driven by a cable from the distributor. Since this engine is part of the same family as your Z134, maybe it would work to find that distributor and alternator from a scrap yard. Maybe even new. Something to check out.
Or you could get a tach from an aftermarket company like Datcon or Stewart Warner and you won"t need a cable drive.
I think Genessee sells alternator kits. You have a generator if it"s original.
