Looking at purchasing a Massey Ferguson, I believe that the model number was FE 35 ?
Is this possible? Serial Number SNM 254157? Anyone know the year? Approximate value?

Thank you for any info you may provide

Hi there,

A MF 35, SNM 254157 is built in 1961

The SNM indicates that it is a Standard chassis, 3-152 Perkins diesel, and Dual clutch.

Standard chassis has nothing to do with Standard Motor Company where the TE-20 was built.

The other options were V and J, for Vineyard, and Industrial.

The engine is the Chromard liner engine, chrome sleeves (liners).

The dual clutch means when you press the clutch half way down the tractor stops, and when you press it to the bottom the hydraulic pump and PTO shaft stops too.

Maybe the commision plate says it is a FE 35, but it is a MF 35, the FE is the Ferguson 35, same tractor, but it has more to do with the Massey Harris - Ferguson merge.
So, when purchasing parts for it, you will find it as MF 35. The FE 35 never had Perkins engine, but the Standard engine, either gas, gas/kerosene or diesel.
All Standard engines has exhaust pipe on right side and Perkins engine has it on left side. This counts for MF 35 and MF 65.

Since I live in Norway I will say nothing about prices, since it seems prices are nuts over in America.

The MF 35 is as Jack in NB says an excellent tractor. Engine easy to start and reliable. Just promise me to take a full service when you have it home.....

Well, that was all.

Bill

Great tractors - reliable, economical to fix. A complete engine rebuild kit - everything but bearings - for the 3 cyl diesel is only $478 and 520 Canadian!

They run $1500 - 4000 here in NB depending on condition. Take the top dollar figure and deduct the costs for tires, tin and paint, repairs to engine, 3-point pump, misc, and you'll have a figure to spend.

Once fixed up, they'll run almost forever!

Jack in NB.. thanks for the info and the resource. Built in England! Would this cause parts to differ from the standard? I have picked up a copy of CT which I had mail to Ontario
and there really is no listing for the FE 35? They are asking $3000.00, needs tires, rear axle seal, I'd imagine cost would be similiar in NB as Ontario.

Hello, Jack -

Bill's comments are correct about model numbers. He really knows those machines! We have 5
massey 35's here, and I've learned quite a bit from reading him!

Most parts for the MF 35's are interchangeable. Some differences - the british units have lucas
and/or CAV electrics rather than delco, and a different steering gearbox. Neither give much
problem; when the generator goes, we replace with a single wire alternator - about $90.

Your prices are similar to ours, I think. And I think I'd negotiate on price - eg, fix tires and seal
leak? Can you try it out to see how the engine behaves for power, hot oil pressure (30 or better
hot idle is great) and oil consumption?

Good luck, and let me know if you land it - may be able to help on parts.

Jack

I bet its a TE-35 or maybe even a TO-35 based on the serial number - mid 50's no idea on value. I just started to rebuild one that was left in the woods 15 years ago. Changed the oil, plugs, points and distributor added some gas and it start on the second try. I have found that most of the parts I need to restore it are availabe. Good luck with it.

Regards,
Bob

It's possible that it is a FE 35, I've got one myself, it's a MF from the thirties.
