Bought a new PTO shaft for my MF50 as the old one had a torn up needle bearing surface and the area where the seal rides was deeply grooved. New shaft was the new design where you only needed one snap ring for the rear bearing. Had to clean up some burs and slag from the splines where the sliding gear rides. Installed it and found the shaft was harder to turn by hand than a new seal would cause, and it would bind badly at one point. Pulled it back out and after some inspection found that the middle needle bearing surface looked like it was not machined true and inline with the rest of the shaft. I removed the rear ball bearing and slid the shaft into only the two needle bearings. You could see the shaft wobble at the back of the tractor when spun. Unfortunately I bought the shaft more than a month ago and then got busy with other things so Im beyond the return period. Im having a machine shop look at it to see if they can do anything for a reasonable price. I guess this was a good lesson to inspect new parts completely and immediately when you receive them, although Im not sure I would have noticed this problem just by looking at it. Anyone else have problems like this with new machined parts?

Dan

I ordered it from the parts store on this site. I can't remember the company name on the box...its at the machine shop with the shaft. I'll post who it is when I get it back.

Not sure if the MF135 Orchard PTO would have fit it but I have lots of MF165 rear(Orchard MF135) end parts and MF135 Perkins Gas Engines part for sale. I gave up on EBay seems the 135 orchards don't break very often so I am watching this site in case someone needs a part for theres I have. Plus part is I have 75% of the replacement parts for mine if I need something and it is the same year & model 1969 MF 135 Orchard. Mark H.

Willie, how's the old power wagon going? Have a question. Do you have a MF135 gas (1962 or so) front nose cone with insert? It attatches above the grille. Have a friend who is in desperate need of one. Thanks, MIKE

Sorry all the tin was sold fast like hot cakes along with the complete power steering setup and front axle assembley! The Old Power Wagon got sold and built Tender instead. Restored a M37 and sold it to buy my 1962 CJ5 V6 Jeep that ate all the money from the M37 real fast! Just sold my old Tender and used the money to build me a bigger and better one for next years fire season. This one is a keeper unless the bottom falls out of the Contract Fire work with the USFS. Funny how you fix up something and when it is done you sell it and start another? Mark H.

Thanks Willy (Mark). He did find a place today here in Alberta that had aftermarket stuff, he got the nose assembly and crest for about $120 Canadian which I think is pretty good. I think it comes out of the states, probably made offshore somewhere. Quick question here. This fellow rebuilt the engine on his 135, had a strange, faint rattling engine noise (probably in the upper engine half and probably towards the front) after the rebuild which he didn't think sounds right. He pulled it all apart and measured everything up and it checked out to factory specs. After reassembling it, he still has the noise, it's not real bad but he still doesn't feel right about it. He's an experienced engine rebuilder but has never heard another 135 gas running so he's a bit stumped. Someone on the forum here before said that those engines are not the quietest that Perkins have ever made but somehow he can't buy that. He thinks the water jackets are somewhat shallow and maybe some normal noise might be magnified somewhat. If you've heard those running, would you say that they are maybe noisier than most?

Mine has made noises for over 3 years now. It has 9780 hours on it and still runs great but back fires once in a while when you gas it on a cold day and pull off. They are one tough engine compaired to many I have taken apart. Some day I will total rebuild mine. I just did the valves as a bandade but untill it starts to go down hill I am leaving it along. Who knows it might go another 5 years since it sound the same as when I got it. I am so cheap I keep blowing out the same fuel filter since I bought it and it was needing changed then. I just want to use the tractor and when it dies I will rebuild it. I have a spare block and head plus allmost a complete engine in parts but why fix what is not broke. Yes I think they are a noisy engine compaired to others but a GOOD Heavy Built Engine!! Mark H.
