hi mate, everyone always complains about it being slow off the fergusn plate but it isnt really THAT bad. I use the ferguson pump on my 135 and its never been a problem. if you have to sit still and wait for it to raise yes it would be nice if it was faster but it isnt terrible. Also most of the time theres something else to do while its raising anyway (ie get to wherever youre dumping!)

If I were going to use the loader a lot I would
get a front pump kit. The hyd system in your
165 would give you slow travel. A limited number
of 165's had an auxiliary 10GPM pump inside.Your
tractor would most likely then have Hyd.indepen-
dent PTO and the shifter lever would have a red
plastic knob on it. Chuck

You can use a front mounted pump, and draw from the rear end or if the frame has a reservoir built in, use that. On our 165, I drilled a hole through the PTO shifter plate and put a tube through it for my suction, then ran it up to the pump, back to the control valve mounted on the fender, then the return is going into a 3/8 plug on the top of the transmission, under the seat on the same side I draw from. If you want I can take some pictures and e-mail them to you.

Hi,
Good idea using the PTO shifter plate as a supply to your front pump but please be aware of a couple of things;
The pump you use may be of a higher flow capacity than the Ferguson pump. If so you will need to use a 1/2" bore minimum hose for the oil supply. Be careful wher you drill the hole in the side plate as the 'full' oil level is not far up the plate. You run the risk of cavitation, that is taking air in with the oil.
You may also find that you inlet to the hose will create a 'hole' in the oil especially if you are on a slight slope to the right. Don't overfill the system to compensate as you risk oil getting into the clutch housing and brake shoes (if fitted). Whatever size inlet hose you use, the return hose and fittings MUST be bigger to prevent backpressure when you have normal oil flow passing through PLUS that from single acting rams (if fitted) as the loader is dropped.
The ideal return point is through the gear box filler plug. Fitting to accommodate most hoses are readily available. The return plug in the side of the lift cover is NOT big enough.
Hope this helps
DavidP

I took a 1/2" female pipe nipple, threaded it on the O.D. on the lather, I think it was 1 1/4" UNF. I drilled and tapped a matching hole into the cover, using an o-ring on the outside and a nylon lock/jam nut on the inside, and then put a street elbow w/ a 3" pipe nipple inside to draw farther down in the transmission case. I ended up having to notch out the transmision a little because I didn't put the nipple in high enough. I should have used a 3/4" suction line, because in the winter the pump just works too hard to draw the cold oil through the smaller 1/2" hose. I plan to upgrade sooner or later, but for now I use a magnetic heater on the bottom of the transmission case.

As far as the return goes, there was an elbow already sticking out from the lift cover so I knew it would work. I know it's only 3/8", but if anything it restricts the free fall of the loader so it doesn't drop like a rock. Actually works nice for that. We've got double acting cylinders on ours.
