My 165 had a 3 wire alt. on it and working fine. 2 weeks ago I noticed it wasn't charging. If you turn the lights on it would discharge. I bought a new 1 wire alt and hooked it up and it was the same problem. I put a new amp guage on it and again the same problem. I put a meter on it and sometimes it pushed 28 volts on the hot terminal on the alt. Other it pushed 14 volts. This is a one wire system and goes from the hot term. on the alt. across the amp. guage, to the hot term. on the battery. I had 12.58 volts on the battery no matter what I did. I could increase the rpm's, turn the lights on, nothing would change the voltage at the battery. I was thinking the voltage should go up to around 13.5-14 volts at the battery when its charging. What do you think my oroblem is. The battery? Thanks

hello!

To me it sounds like there"s a connection problem somewhere between the terminal in the alternator and the ammeters other terminal. If the connection would be good, it would show the same voltage in the battery"s hot terminal and the alternator"s hot terminal, no matter what. I hope this helps you some :)

GC, I certainly agree, a battery that just setting there if charged up ought to read 12.6 volts (it has 6 cells @ 2.1 volts each) and most alternators will make it rise to 13 and 14 depending on them and the battery. The one wire units may not excite n kick in until a faster RPM but it sounds like you been there. On the 3 wire you can excite n flash them, but Im unsure what you can do on that one wire. I guess the charging circuit from the battery,,,,, ,to and through the ammeter,,,,, ,,to the alternators main stud is all good and low resistance????? and the alternator is well grounded???

Only other thing I would think of is the batterys condition, they can go bad and not accept any charge you know. Insure thefres electrolyte above all the plates and no cells exhibit a gray or milky color, maybe have it load tested.

If the circuit from the alternator to the battery is good, I dont see how the alternator could read 28 volts????? (that sounds like a disconnected unloaded reading) cuz its supposedly connected to the battery (via the ammeter) and the battery loads it and to an extent holds its voltage down. CHECK THE WIRES TO THE BATTERY AND THE ALTERNATORS GROUND !!!!! !!!
