Hi Pete If the long shift lever on the left will move and the transmission is hung in second you have a broke shift fork. If it is hung in second and the long shift lever will not move then the lever has jump over into the other shift fork. If this is your problem This article should help Getting the main shift lever unstuck
Pull your filler plug for the transmission look inside you will see a big gear. Find a level spot shut off the tractor. Push the clutch down & put the high low shifter in neutral to relieve any pressure that might be on the gears. With a long screwdriver or a small pry bar pry the big gear forward if it is hung in reverse pry it back if it is hung in first gear. If you happen to go to far it will go in the other gear. If humg in second or third gear you have to pry on the shift fork you can see through the filler hole. if hung in second pry the fork toward the front of the tractor. If hung in third pry the fork toward the back of the tractor. You need to get it in the center. You should be able to feel the detent balls pop in the grooves in the shift rail as you move the gear. Through the years I have probably unstuck at least a 1000 of them this way. It is a common problem on the Massey tractors after they get a little wear on them

Hi Dean...well, I have tried to move the gears with a pinch bar...I can only see 2 large gears throught the oil fill hole ...both are pretty close together and won"t move...how much of a mission is it to remove the gearbox cover??... I don"t have a manual and it looks as though the whole steering system will also have to come apart!!

Only move one gear! Put the bar or screwdriver between them. You are only stuck in one.

On one of my MF35's if I tried to shift to fast it would lock up the transmission, I would have to take off the oil fill plug and use a small pry bar and move the gears until they were free. It would be in two gears at once, I just had to shift a little slower. My experience Allan

Worked on Ferguson once, but do not know if the same as yours. Here goes.

Put shift lever in second gear position. Remove large plug next to lever where oil is added (if it has a large plug). Don't remember if when you put it in 2nd you move shift lever from neutral to forward or rearward directions,

But if lever is moved rearward, use a pry bar or such and move gear in a rearward direction thru the hole. If shift lever is moved forward, move the gear forward.

Gear has just moved too far and shifter fork cannot move it. Shifter fork should re-engage.

Hope this helps.

Remove the shift lever, look down inside, and make sure all the rails are in neutral.. Many times they get jammed in two gears at once.
