MH 44 brake drum removal

I've got a 1951 Massey 44 with leaking oil seals from behind the brake drums. I need to get the drums off the tractor to replace the seals. I've removed the snap ring that holds the drums but I can't get the thing that is on the outer most part of the shaft off (which seems to have to come off before the drum slides off - the drum is loose right now). The "thing" is larger than the snap ring and is round with notches cut out of it. Of course my repair manual is for later models which don't have this type of set up. Any help would be appreciated.

Though I tend to favor the double disc brakes on
MH models, I question if the 'thing' you refer to
is not the cone-like hub, of the brake drum. The
drum should have two 1/2" threaded holes, to use
a puller. Perhaps your drum is loose, due to being
separated from the notched hub. By attaching a
puller, you can attempt to a see if the hub moves,
when you increase tension to pull the drum. The
snap ring should have been the only piece which
secures the brake drum on Bendix shoe brakes. Your
drum assembly may be damaged. Good luck.
