Does anyone know what would cause valves to stick on engine. The tractor has been sitting for some time [years] but I had it running for a few times and it ran nice. I went to start it a couple weeks ago and it backfired trough the carb. I pulled of the valve cover and found two bent push rods. The number 3 and 4 intake valves are sticking.Has anyone seen that happen before.Any advice would be appreciated.

Dale, Was it the intake valves? I had the intake valve siick in a #44 Massey, a 1950 Chev pickup and a AR JD tractor all in one day. Four push rods bent in the ptckup. It happend right after I added some STP fuel stabiliser to the gas. This was supposed to keep the carbs from gumming up from the new gas when storing. Drained all the gas and the problem was solved. Did you add something to your gas? Hope I helped you. Harold

Harold, I think you might be on the right track. I had to drain the gas out of the riding lawn mower a while back because it didn't run right and that was probably the same gas I used in the tractor. The gas I drained from the tractor was kind of green color. I think I might of got E-85 gas. I,m having a hard time getting the valves loose. I think I'll give marvel mystery oil a try. Thanks for the input.

I am sure that is your problem. I got the tractors running by draining the tanks, fresh gas with some ATF fluid. I had to take the tappit levers off the chev and there was enough valve stem above keepers that I could attach a half inch drill to them and spin them , also used WD40. No trouble since. Hope I was of some help. ---Harold
