If you are certain it is a 444, not just wrong decals, your tractor would have the lowered PTO housing, above the draw bar. These have more parts to achieve PTO. An upper shaft runs from the front of the transmission case, with a gear on the rear, and bearing. A second gear is below, then a third, which is attached to the PTO shaft. MH did not complete the R & D plans, to offer independent(full Live PTO), like Oliver had. Harry Ferguson, on the MHF Board in 1953, baulked at any budget for the MH tractor division. MH had offered an over-ride PTO hand clutch, beginning with the 1950 44 Diesel. This option remained the sole link to live-power, through 1957 production. Attempting to install the live clutch today, reqiures a MH hobby mechanic, or an I & T manual(teardown, pull a bevel gear-2 days labor). The live clutch assembly includes double disc brakes, but the clutches are often worn, back shop drilled, bolted, due to slippage under hard pulling. Unless your 444D is a Standard(30" rear tires), surprised it has no PTO.
