This old boy has been running a little rough lately, so I decided to investigate the other day.
while it was idling, I pulled the plug wires one at a time. When I pulled #2 , there was almost no difference in sound, but when I put the wire back on it smoothed right up UNTIL the plug wire terminal snapped onto the top of the plug. Then it got rough again. I repeated this several times and each time the engine smoothed up when the terminal was about 1/2" - 1/4" away from the top of the plug, then it got rough again as the wire end snapped onto the plug end. Won"t cost much to replace both the wire and plug, But I am curious to know what exactly is going on here. The other three plugs/wires don"t do this. Electricity is still a great mystery to me. Any ideas?

Moving the plug wire away increases the voltage needed to jump the gap. Increasing voltage will fire a plug that"s oiled and won"t fire at lower voltage.
Try a new plug.

I ran a Briggs and Stratton lawn mower for years with the plug wire hanging about 1/2" from the plug. Once the motor got well warmed up I could connect it, but it didn't run any better then.

Most likely some component is weak and the air gap does its job, strengthening the spark.
