My MF 274 keeps dying. It has the four cylinder perkins obviously. It will run for maybe an hour or so than just sputter out and die. You have to bleed the injectors to get it to start again and it will run for maybe another half hour to an hour than die again. I tightened all the fuel line fittings and when I back off the injector lines at the cylinders and turn it over it spits out fuel. Do I have a bad fuel pump or what? Right now my machine is in the bush with the oak log I was skidding sitting behind it. Any ideas?

You boys are bang on! The elbow at the bottom of the tank was clogged and where the line entered into the pump had some gunk in there. I took some tools in the bush and took it all apart and cleaned out the whole system. Not very fun at all but it fixed the problem and now everything is running like a top!! Thanks again for all the info.

I had exactly the same problem on my MF-294 (similar to 274 but uses 248 engine);probably the problem is in the tractor fuel tank. The valve or elbow just under the fuel tank gets obstructed very easily. I cleaned it up and no problem after that.
BTW, be sure you have a fuel filter on your Diesel storage tank that supplies all your Diesel tractors; if not at least, add a screen on the tank's air intake because this is a large entry for .. flies that sooner or later plug the valve or elbow under your 274 fuel tank.

I have a Perkins MF135 and had similar problems. Do not know if it is the same set up but fuel tank tap has a small conical mesh filter which can clog up. The lift pump filter bowl has a very fine mesh filter on the top which can clog up other than that new CAV filters and new fuel.

Three things I know of that will cause that on those engines 1. A restriction in the lines probably between the tank and transfer pump. 2. A bad transfer pump a lot of times they will pump good with the hand lever but the short stroke from the camshaft lobe that works them they will not move the volume of fuel the injection pump needs. 3. I have had several that had something floating near the bottom of the tank when it gets near the tank outlet it will suck down over the outlet and shut off the fuel as soon as the engine stops it will float back away and the engine will run till it sucks down over the outlet again. I have found pieces of plastic, paper. new line protector caps and fuel jug lid gasket floating in tanks. Hope this helps you find your problem

Thanks for the advice Big D. I will check out your pointers first thing in the morning. I cruised your site briefly and wow! Very informative. I have added it to my favourites list on my browser and will visit your site a little more thoroughly soon. I also own a Massey Ferguson 470 Loader with the perkins diesel. I have found the front axles on those machines have a tendency to fail in the front axles as the ball bearing assemblies are prone to failure. To repair mine I took the axle shafts out and had them machined by the local shop to accept the universal joints from a 3/4 ton truck driveshaft. This modification allows the machine to steer the same way (with a slightly increased turning radius) without any problems. I haven't had any problems whatsoever with the machine since that mod was made. My neighbour, who also owns a 470 and has been in construction for thirty years, came up with the idea and shared his rebuild tip with me and I with you and the other readers on the site. If there is anyone else who has the same machine and would like some part numbers and a description of the modification I can be reached via email through these postings. Thanks for all the help!
