I greatly appreciate the information and advice comparing the Ford 861 with the MF 135.

It's come down to price. The Ford (gas) seems like everything works, including the live PTO. It's a 5-speed (no hi/lo shifter). Looks average, at best and has that 6V system still.

The 135 also seems fully functional with the 3-spd + hi/lo for 6. From my last post, it sounds like a UK model.

Both owners are small dealers, mainly implements...and they are proud of their machines.

It'll take US $3900 to buy the Ford and $4500 for the 135. It's hard to just engine power without working the machines, but the MF somehow seems more solid, plus it's a diesel which I am more accustomed to.

Unfortunately, I think both these prices are $500 to $700 high, or I would have bought one. I would generally rate both machines as average condition. Am I undervaluing these tractors? Any further suggestions, esp. on price, would be appeciated...obviously, the region is the Texas area.

Thanks again.
Kurt

If the engines, trans, and rear tires are decent in either case then those prices wouldn't be too far off from what are asked here in central Ohio. In some cases they might be low, if the machines are clean and dry. The trouble with the Fords and Masseys in that size is that they are truly utility tractors and lots of people could use them for lots of things. They are small enough to trailer easily, too.

Go see what Kubota asks for a similar sized machine.

If the diesel engine doesn't bother you and there's a dealer handy go for the Massey. We've always liked our MH50 gas rig.

Seems to me that the decision rests largely with the features of the individual tractor. Does either have power steering? Diff lock? Better tires? A pair of 13.4x28 tires here cost about $550 installed.

For my money the MF with the hi-low is an advantage, if for nothing but value later..

In Washington State the prices are about similar to what you are quoted. Does either dealer provide any warranty?

I would also suggest running your primary choice till it is hot to check for hot oil pressure and leaks.

I still like the MF best!!
Good luck,
Bob

The Ferguson 40 is identical to the M-H 50 and the M-F 50, except they have slightly different hoods and front grills, and of course colors. The Ferguson 40 hood design was later used for the British M-F 65, but with horizontal front grill/screening. The Detroit M-F 65 Had the same design as the M-F 50. The M-H 50 was unique as it had "Massey-Harris dimples" on each side of the hood. We don't have many used tractors here in so.Nevada so I can't tell you the value of the Ferguson.

Kurt: Sounds like it's going to come down to something like dealer service and parts. From the way prices have gone in this area(Mid West Ontario), neither one sounds too far out of line. Myself, I'd go for the Massey. Diesel economy, age, popularity, etc. BUT, I'm speaking of this area. Workmaster and Powermaster Fords are VERY rare. When they were new we were getting the English Dextas. I think probably either one will do a good job for you. Good Luck. Tom

They will sell for those prices as estate tractors if not utility tractors.
