Anyone have any recomendation for a suitable battery for a MH 44?. The previous owner had a 12v battery installed. Since all the electrical equipment is original as far as I can see - the battery should be 6v ! I guess that"s why the coil was smoking!

Thanks,
Ian

MH tractors were originally equipped with Group 1 Exide batteries from the factory.

I dont understand why everyone is going over to 12 volts instead of keeping it original. if you still have the generator and 6v coil and regulator why not just get yourself a good battery and youre good to go. If youre not charging get a new regulator and get your generator checked or rebuilt. I got a new regulator, and totally rebuilt the old generator for under 100 bucks by a good local guy. I have 2 Masseys with 6v and both start no problem at zero. I have more problems with gas leaking than battery trouble. Till everything is said and done and all the hassle with 12v, you have just as much if not more into the tractor than if you kept the 6v, kept the tractor original, and to me the 6v is more desirable than a cut up ignition system. Yeah yeah you can jump it from your truck with 12v but you shouldnt have to worry about that if you shut the power off. Just keep it original you wont be sorry if you sell it later on.

Ian, when using a 6 volt battery, I recommend the absolute biggest n highest rated that will physically fit into the compartment. If extreme cold weather starting is a must and an important issue, you may wanna spend $100 and get an Optima AGM battery, as they have more CCA then a lead acid.

Also to aid cranking on 6 volt systems, I highly recommend the use of 00 Gauge Battery n Starter n Ground cables. Its also good if the ground cable atatches to a big main frame bolt on or near the starter as possible as opposed to a rusty tin seat or battery box etc.

If it was PROPERLY converted from 6 to 12 volts but the old 6 volt coil was retained, it would have used an added external voltage dropping (12 to 6) series Ballast Resistor to prevent overheating the coil and so the points wouldnt burn up prematurely. Also it would need a 12 volt Voltage Regulator and 12 volt light bulbs etc.

Thanks for the reply John.
Given that everything is stock at the moment. What would be the best way to proceed to convert to 12v?
Would I need a new generator?
As much detail as possible would be very helpfull.

Thanks again'
Ian

John, Massey Harris Guy, - Thanks for the input. I am hearing "keep it 6v" load and clear! I will try and find some beefier battery cables though. The regular automotive ones I had sourced were just #4 gauge and do look pretty wimpy next to the old ones.- even though the old ones have hardly any insulation left! I am truly amazed the thing ran at all but it did.

Make your own. Thats what I did. I went to the local New Holland- CaseIH dealer for some cables. just a 3 foot one ran about 75 bucks. That was the #00 wire. They had #00 welding wire there for 75 cents a foot. Got 8 foot of that and cut them to the right length and soldered on some ends and put some shrink tube over the ends. Looks like a million bucks. Theres no excess hanging. Neat and clean. Its really easy to do with a small torch and some solder. If you want more details just email me.

Ian, if youre reallyyyyy yyyyy yyyy sure you have this urgent pressing need to convert to 12 voltd, I can help ya I reckon, but under protest lol. Get a 12 volt battery, of course and I would stay at the same polarity as you are now. The usual reason for changing to neg ground is when you change from a Gen to an alternator.

1) Okay,,,,, this IS NOT POLITICALLY OR ELECTRICALLY CORRECT but I have used 12 volt Voltage Regulators on 6 volt Generators n they all worked fine to charge 12 volts PROVIDED you dont have any huge lighting loads. However, the electrically correct answer is to get a 12 volt generator or else have yours converted to 12 by a good old fashioned generator repair shop. Be sure the new VR is the correct voltage and compatible with your ground, be it Pos or Neg....

2) Change any light bulbs to 12 volts

3) EITHER add a series voltage dropping (12 to 6) Ballast resistor in the Igniton circuit after the ignition switch and before the coil if you use the old 6 votl coil ORRRRR RRR replace the coil with a full rated true 12 volt coil. The Ballast Resistors are around 1.5 to 1.85 ohms and 30 watts or so and readily available.

4) I have NEVER changed a starter when I converted, although it can be a tad rough on the bendix n starter drive when you use 12 on a 6

Suppers ready, I may have forgot something but Im hungry lol,\
