Does anyone know if MF made a 4WD version of the 1080 for anywhere in the world. Apparently 2WD only was available in the US. There may be some 4WD's in existence but they may not be of MF origin. Any info appreciated.
Regards
DavidP

Yes there was 4WD version of 1080. Made in France. Same front axle as 168 and 188 had, "MF" name on the hubs so I guess it was their own. Maybe made in Landini/Como factory in Italy?

I did hear of someone in England who had a 2wd converted to 4wd . I do not know who did the conversion but I think it did not work too well. Apparently the 1080 was not a very successful model.Underpowered and unreliable. It was replaced in 1974 by the 595 which I hear was just as bad ( engines blowing up at 2000 hours!) I remember our MF dealer was on his knees wanting us to buy a new 1080 ( we had just bought a new 1100 off him! ) I am glad we did not bother.
David, have you seen the new MF DVD "Massey-Ferguson Tractors 1956-1976"? It is excellent. It features a beautifully restored 1080 and a restored 1969 1100 with only 1800 hours on the clock. Also featured is another MF that "Did not quite make it into the hit parade" the 130.

Hi Roy,
Thanks for your reply. The question was to help someone in the States who was interested in buying a parts book that I have for sale on ebay. He wants one which covers 4WD. There is a photo of one at www.antiquetractors.com/contents/tpic7041.htm
This looks like a kit from someone like 'Selene'.
Regarding the other info;
I believe that our local MF dealer only sold one 1080 in the time that they were available and I know that it gave trouble as I used to look after the other MF's on the farm. I think that the 595 is a very good tractor. I have a customer with 2, a MK1 and Mk2. They as well as the rest of his fleet (2 MF 135, MF 188, IH 634, IH 816, JD 3130 and a JCB)do very little work and are very well maintained. The 595 is an ideal tractor for hedge-cutting for example with its heavy cast rear wheel centres. It is reasonably powerful, simple to work on and a good example does not cost the earth.

Best wishes

DavidP
PS Will try and have a look at the DVD if I can.
