Hello, my grampa wanted me to find out if there would be any problem if he removing the harmonic balancer on his 850 MF, with a Perkins 6cly Diesel Turbo. Would it result in more wear? Damage? Thanx

My neighbor ran his 7080 Allis while the harmonic balancer was bad and he ended up with a broken crank in just one day after he found out the balancer was bad. Had to spend many $$$ plus he lost the use of the tractor during the busy planting season. Jim

Its very possible that removing the harmonic balancer will result in a broken crankshaft. It is not advisable. The reason for regular replacement of a harmonic balance is;They are usually a two part assembly pressed together under 80,000# of pressure with a rubber ring seperating the two parts.Even so it is not unusual for the outer part to move on the rubber ring after years of service.Any movement will throw the whole assembly out of balance. The purpose of the rubber ring is to absorb some of the vibration much like the springs in a pressure plate does. You know, the springs that don't look like they serve any purpose.

T, Im totally unfamiliar with that tractor or engine, but removing the harmonic balancer could cause vibrationnnnn nnnnn nn. Ive seen them where the rubber has gone bad and the counter weight shifted causing big time engine vibration...

I was at the deere deeler the other day and asked how often a lowerhaul should be done.

Funny, the service guy that does it says that he always changes the harmonic balancer also..... interesting. Must know something we don't.

Also I had heard 6000 hrs was the time for the haul but he recommended 5000. Said he could turnkey the job on a 4230 for $1400 including the pick up and delivery.

Might take him up on that when the time comes.
