MF-35 Perkins Diesel Oil Pump

Is there an external oil pressure relief spring on the 152 CI Perkins diesel engine as used in the MF-35? If so, where is it?

The oil pressure gauge on my tractor was broken when I bought it and after replacing it with a new factory design gauge (low-normal-hi) gauge it pegs the gauge at any RPM above idle when the oil is cold. I suspect that someone has shimed or stretched the relief spring, and I am afraid that my new gauge will turn out like the old one if I do not reduce the relief pressure.

Thanks, in advance.

Dean

Mine goes up close to the end of the green at start-up, and I'm using 15-40. Any chance you are using 30 or 40 grade? That would raise the pressure when the engine is cold, I'd think.

Actually, I just changed it because I did not know what was in it when I bought it. It now has 15W40 in it. I'm kind of worried about what might happen to the oil gauge when I start it this winter when it is actually cold. The other morning, when it was about 55-60 degrees, it would peg the gauge at any RPM above idle. Once the oil warmed up a bit it was OK.

The gauge that was in it when I bought it was stuck right in the middle of the range. It would go above middle but would not drop below middle. I wonder if that is what happened to the old gauge.

The MF35 early models A3-152 and the late models AD3-152 engines both have the oil pressure relief valve cast into the oil pump body to access it you have to remove the oil pan

Thanks for the information. I guess I will chance it as I probably will not remove the oil pan for this reason.

Thanks again.

I had an MF245 for 10 years It always pegged the gauge when the oil was cold and most of the ones I worked on did to it never hurt the gauge on any of them.

Thanks again for the info. This is my first MF and since I went to the trouble of installing a new oil pressure gauge I was just worried that the pressure might be too high. I will let it go and worry about other things such as installing a thermostat.

Hi Dean -

Is it possible the new gauge is 0 - 50 lb?

Full scale on the unmarked MF gauges is 80 lb, I think.

It's uncommon for an engine to pin the factory gauge. I've had only one oil pump (out of a dozen or so) replaced on overhaul that pinned an 80 lb gauge; to correct it we removed a washer or two on the relief valve that Big Dean dewscribed.

Yes, perhaps it could be. It's aftermarket and it has only the LOW - NORMAL - HI markings. When time permits, I will check it out with air pressure. In the meantime, this potential problem is much less concern than the opposite problem.

For you perceptive readers, I was NOT trying to imitate Big Dean's delightful Oklahoma drawl.....

"dewscribed" was a typo I didn't catch before hitting the "post message" button!
