I have a MF 35 that is overheating. The pressure is building up in the radiator, enough to blow the water hose off the bottom. I don't know if I have a headgasket that is blown or is the thermostat make be sticking closed, not allowing the water to circulate??? Once I put more water in the radiator the engine ran cool for one hour, more pressure built up and I relased the pressure by taking off the radiator cap. The engine ran cool for the rest of the day. I hope this is a thermostat problem and not a headgasket. I do not plan to run the tractor any more until this problem is repaired.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Make sure that your air filter(s) are clean! Unlike a gas engine that runs with a near constant fuel air ratio, the diesel runs with an "open intake" (i.e. no throttle plate) and has a variable fuel air ratio. As the fuel air ratio increases, the combustion temperature increases. If your intake is restricted, it can artificially raise the fuel air ratio and cause excessive combustion temperatures and overheating. You can literally burn the piston crown. Air filters are critical maintenance items for diesel engines.

Make sure your cap is correct/working one so it releaves the excess presure and you are not over filling the radiator with to much water to allow for expansion when it gets hot.

Can we assume you have hosed all dirt out of the radiator fins and the fan belt is tight?

Yes, The radiator is relatively clean. I did not check the fan belt. But, I am sure it is tight. I have been using the tractor periodically this summer. I have ran the tractor at length on occasions this summer and this problem has not occured.
