I just finished my rebuild on my MF-50 gas Z134 and i have come across a few things i need help with. First of all, I have replaced everything so i know that it just needs fine tuned. She cranks up fine and runs good but i noticed it wants to backfire when it gets a load or i push the throtle up to fast. I set the carb jets at 1 1/2 time out it seems to run good but i dont know if it is the carb or the timing. So is there anyone out there that can tell me how to set both carb and timing? Please go into good detail and which one first? Yesterday i moved the distributor and got it to crank up fast but i dont know how to set it. I would like to start bush hog tomorrow so please help! You said the tractor backfires when you throttle up too fast or when it is under load. I think this could mean that the carb needs to be adjusted more. On my 135 with the Z145 engine, I had to gradually (very small increments) adjust the main jet richer until the tractor stopped missing when I opened up the throttle quickly. I also found that when the governor opened up, the tractor would pop just when the governor opened, then settle in to run OK. I added more fuel to the mixture little by little until I didn't have the popping when the throttle was opened up, and the problem with the governor went away at the same time. There may be something else, but your problem sounds much like mine.

Big Dean is a life saver!!!!!Have a MH50 that ran pretty good, but backfired whenever I put a load on it ,or pulled the throttle too fast! I rebuilt the head changed the carb. nothing helped!!Then I read a post from Big Dean!He told another guy with the same problem that he may have wired his distributer wrong. I didnt touch the dist.I put It up on number one, changed all the wires, presto!!!!! ! the old tractor runs like new.the tractor had been sitting for about 15 years with the wires on wrong!!!!Thanks DEAN !!!
