UGH~ I'm having the darndest time with my mustang... Here goes. Tractor would fire right up with no issues whatsoever but every so often lost power enough so that it ran real rough and wouldn't pull. Shut it down and fire right back up like nothing happened, ran great. This would happen about twice an hour. Thought maybe a sticking float in the carb so rebuilt it. Nope. New plugs and wires, Nope. New electronic ignition... BIG NO! Just dropped this in tonight thinking that it might be the condensor or who knows and I'll be damned if the machine won't run worth a turd. Got it to idle a bit at half throttle but barely had power to move itself. Here's the kicker, disconnected the battery ground while it was running rough and wham, it fired to life on compression ignition. Touched the terminal to battery again and it would bog right down. Any ideas on this one guys??? I really need the help. My next step is to buy a new 40,000v coil but the way things are going, the machine won't even start if I do that too! I don't understand why it will run better with the battery disconnected at high enough rpm and bog right down by only connecting the ground... Any help here?
Thanks much,
John

??? I dunno. your first problem sounds like fuel rather than ignition - like a plugged tank outlet, sediment bowl screen or the cap vent plugged. ( or the wrong cap - most likely) As to the foring on compression I think more like it's running on the generator with the ground unhooked and the voltage probably rises as soon as the ground is lost. Do you have a 12 volt ign on a 6 v system?

Hi Alan. Nope, there are no problems with fuel delivery - that was my first suspicion too but that all checked out fine. It's a 12 volt conversion done a long time ago by someone else. I'm going to try and get a good new coil today and rotor and cap (even though I think those 2 things are fine I just want to eliminate them too and know that they are fresh). Could you explain more about the generator (alternator) running things without the ground? That makes alot more sense to me now that I think about it. But then why would it bog right down when I do connect the battery?
Also, can I pull the ballast resistor out if I put in a new 12 volt coil? I understand that these are used to protect a 6v coil on a 12 volt system. Thoughts?
Thanks much!
John

You might consider isolating your ignition system from the rest of the tractor"s electrical system by disconnecting power from the distributor and using a seperate battery. This might help you pin down the problem as in the ignition system, or elsewhere. The ballast resistor is usually bypassed during starting to help offset the voltage drop caused by the heavy drain of the starter. If left out all the time the coil will overheat and die.
Good luck!

Thanks folks. Here's where I'm at now. Got ahold of a mechanic friend of mine who lives a ways away and he said that it sounded like a classic backfeed to him. Hadn't considered the idea since I hadn't changed any of the wiring to the alternator or battery at all. But, I did add the 12 volt coil and the real change is that I added the pertronix ignition which is a 2 wire unit versus the old one wire. With the one wire I understand it was usually sent to the neg on the coil? -I don't remeber where I unhooked it... Anyhow, the new ign gets wired to the correct pos and neg sides. This might have switched things around from origional? My friend suggested that I completely disconnect the alternator to eliminate any backfeed and then try to fire it up. Well, it was dark by this time and I went out to try. Gave the bugge a try and noticed a whole lotta sparks shooting out of the starter housing so I'm off to get that rebuilt now... Oh, pulled the main return wire off the distributor to check spark from the coil and timing and it seems to work fine. Maybe weak but it was working. I'm voting on the alternator now.
Thanks, John

What are you using for electronic ign? and yes, once the engine is running and the system charging it will usually run on the alternator when the battery is disconnected. Not great for the alternator though. It sounds like there's a problem with the electronic conversion. As to the coil, if you want to run without a ballast resistor you need a coil that is made for full 12 volts. Typically Delco are 8 volt and the older Ford was 6 volts when running, both had a bypass to give 12 for starting.

Well, replaced the coil today, along with cap and rotor, and still no good... It fires occasionally just as it had all along but now I can't even get it to stay running at all. I pulled the plugs and tried to see if I was getting good spark and I think it is very weak. I just can't understand it since it ran hard with the occasional flutter- which this elec ign was supposed to fix- dropped in the ign and now this. Help!
