I just got the 444 running. We cleaned the plugs and changed the gas, tried it but it wouldn't fire. We filed the points and that did the trick. There was a metal ticking sound when she first started up but it quit after about five minutes. Does any one know what normal oil pressure is? It stayed at 25psi just off idle all the way up to wide open throttle. We'll probably run her for about an hour then hitch it up to a four bottom plow and see what she can do.There is a slight growl in the trany but it doesn't sound that bad.

If you haven't already done it,maybe you should check that transmission oil level before you pull the crap out of the tractor.Better still why not drain and refill the transmission. There could be water in the bottom of the case if the tractor has set for a while.

Right again, Bob. Those growling gears are in
a lube of sludge, water, rust. Once drained, a kerosene 13 gallon fill, drive around ten minutes,
drain. Should look nasty. Pulling 4 bottoms will
mean filling the case with 13 gallons of extreme
pressure 140W tranny oil. This is probably your
best method, besides teardown, to quiet the gear
noise. That 277 LP engine requires more than common 80-90W gear oil, in the finals. Good luck.

I checked the transmission level it was full of 80/90 but it was pretty milky. One of the rear axel seals is leaking. I'll probably tear it down this winter and paint it next summer so I'll drain it and flush it before I disassemble it.The farmer modified the hydraulics some and I'll have to find a few parts ,but I can't believe how good the tractor held up digging in a potato field for 30 or 40 years. I never new how big and powerful it was hiding there under the trees. It must have really been a top of the line tractor in it day. It says power steering on the side of the gas tank but I don't see any hydro lines running to the steering anywhere. It's a wide front and it seams to steer eazy one way but not the other. Thanks for the input.
