Hood Emblem on a M-F 65

Dad just got a M-F 65. We were told it was a 1956, but out research tells us M-F didn't start making these until 1957. So we're guessing at this point it's a 1957.

Anyways, we can tell that something belongs up front on top of the hood where the air intake is. We can also tell that it's held on by 3 bolts (or something similar). Can anyone tell us what belongs here? Someone has told dad it should be a bird or something, but we have search all over the internet, and have not seen any pics with this bird on the hood.

We did do a Google image search, but we saw no pictures good enough to show this bird on the hood. In fact, it appears that most of the 65's don't have a bird. Is this correct?

The early MF-65's had the bird/airplane emblem.
Check with your local MF dealer too. Mine has them and they are competitive with the internet guys on price. If yours still has the tag on the dash with the serial # you can find out which year it really is.

Duh....now why didn't I think of going to my local M-F dealer?? Thanks for the tip. Looks like a trip to Knoxland's coming soon.

And I do believe the serial plate is still there. I'll get the serial # and post it here so we can find out the year.

Well, I took the trip to Knoxland's with the serial # in hand. According to their books, we have a 1958.
And I asked him about the hood emblem. Turns out he had one for $38.50, so that came home with me.
Guy at the counter was very helpful, and gladly answered all of my questions. Thanks for your help guys.
