As a side note..this is my first diesel tractor replacing an old Ford gas tractor so I am learning as I go and not to well evidenetly.

Long story...Tractor ran out of fuel...filled up tractor with some neighbors fuel that he said was diesel (may have been but it sure smelled of gas) and then added 5 gallons of diesel I purchased, primed (using lift pump), went to the bleed valve on the main body of fuel injector pump and bled off air. At the time I did not know about the bleed valve on what I call the throttle body (top section of injector pump). I was told I needed to go to the fuel injectors and bleed air off there. After fighting the thing a while two came loose. Was told the next day about the possibility of two bleed valves. Went home bled the bleed valves (both) and the tractor started up and ran for 15-20 minutes. Then a bunch of smoke started coming out the stack and it eventually choked off. Tried cranking again and it would fire run for 5-10 seconds then smoke and cut off. Sometimes wouldn't even fire up at all just turn over.

I was afraid that the fuel was bad so I drained all the fuel out of the tank...out of the lines to the fuel filter...drained water seperator.

While I was doing that I did back the bleed screw out of the top blled valve (throotle body) and could not find it last night so I used a regular bolt which may or may not be part of my problem.

Put new fuel in. Bleed the entire system (did not bleed at fuel injectors. Would not even crank.

Any ideas...could the choking off problem be the fuel or do I have trash in the system...I am taking any and all suggestions and all help will be GREATLY appreciated!

Will

sounds like one or both of your fuel filters maybe plugged from your suspect fuel, also you must bleed the lines at the injecters to get all the air out

I just had to bleed our 285 after changing the filters this weekend. In the 285 manual, it says to crack the 1 bleeder screw in between the 2 filters on top of the fuel filter mounting block. Then you have to bleed the injection pump in 2 spots. I happened to get air into the injection lines, so I had to crack them also. I cracked them one at a time right on the injection pump and cranked it until straight fuel came through. Only did 2 when it fired right up, and runs just fine now.

I wish it was like our 1855 Oliver, just change the clamp-on filter, bleed that and go

What sequence did you bleed the system? I believe you have to bleed primary filter, then secondary filter and then injectors. Order the operators manual it will give you good information..

I have a 240 and have ran out of fuel once. I had to bleed at the injectors till it cranked and it shut of after around 10 minutes, bled again, shut of again, bled again and it was OK. I won"t run out again.

I actually can"t say. I was operating the tractor and the exhaust is downswept behind me, but I don"t recall any excessive smoke.
