The whine you question is probably located under the battery box, inside the input shaft housing. This tractor had incredible engine torque, plus geared down with a ten speed transmission. There had to be a weak link, since a bare bones R & D budget, following the MHF merger. The ten speed was off the shelf;most new concepts scraped. The flange assembly(shaft, gear, ring, bearings, woodruf key), simply wore out, got noisey. One woodruff key can be replaced, by number two, the shaft can get scored, if run with failed key. The hi/lo is capable of ripping some teeth, since unproven in pre-production testing. Reasons why the '54-'55 44 RC Special was a stronger tractor. Even 333D's were able to damage drive train gears. Your 444LP will easily outperform that other red, however, MH's were often hitched to oversized implements, as pure workhorses, run to death. The noise can stay, unless you have hard work plans, then you need to find a 'parts' 333G, with no-play input flange, swap out the assembly, possibly hi/lo gear, or two. Check back, as Bob knows, we never close. Good luck.
