Here in Texas it is hot and my right foot is getting hotter. Has anyone ever made a heat shield for the tailpipe running under the right foot rest? What would make a good heat shield? Any ideas, my foot is slowly cooking....

How about this. Try to get a piece of pipe insulation to fit the top half of the muffler. It is used on hot pipes in oil and chemical plants and on steam lines to radiant heaters. It's made to stop temperatures way higher than a muffler.

I tried making a shield by folding up some aluminum coil stock, making it several layers thick with some airspace between each layer. It helps a bit but isn't near enough.

Next time my exhaust system goes out, I'm gonna take it to a muffler shop and see if they can move the muffler forward a few inches. That should keep most of the heat up in front of my foot a ways.

I agree with Lou, Try aluminium. Try to get an Aluminium plate to slide between the muffler and footrest, aluminium dissipates a lot of heat.

Fix a sheet metal shield at " distance from the muffler/exhaust pipe like it was done originally on the TE 20. Check this out for size:

I have used a MF 35x with horisontal muffler a bit but the heat is not a problem here at 63 degrees north. I think you should ask some builder because there are some asbestosfree insulation boards on the market. I do not know what they are called in America but some consists of cement and cellulose and some of cement and ceramic fibres. Maybe you can find an offcut and make a heat shield? I do not know if it would work but some of them have qite similar properties to the asbestos boards of the old and bad days.

I melted a couple of pairs of boots on the TEA20 until I learned to drive with my feet up on the pegs.

I had a TO-35 with same problem, factory footrest had what looked like a piece of asbesto(similar to the old siding on houses)sandwiched in there. I made a full length sheet metal shield and spaced it 1/2" below footrest, didn't work. I solved the problem by putting on a vertical exhaust. Now, no more hot foot and no more exhaust coming up from behind gassing you. I cut the vertical muffler pipe off so the tip is about even with the top of my head, so limbs are not too much of a concern. Sounds good too.

I had a gas 50 that used to do that to me,I wonder if some aluminum foil somehow wired to the top might reflect heat. Worth a try. good luck Lou
