Well I got the head off my Perkins Gas and the walls look nice. No scoring at all, no signs of wear paterns on the walls and ever so slite of a ridge at the top hardly big enought to snag a finger nail on. Now my valves are carboned up pretty good on 2 pistons they were the ones that gave me a 90 psi reading cold & dry and with some oil they raised about 5 psi. The cylinder closest to the radiator read 140 psi on one stroke! So I think I can get away with just a valve seat job on it. I am taking the head down to the machine shop to have them look at it. Sometimes when I would shut this tractor off it would blow air back thru the air cleaner and took a long time to stop turning when shut off. Head gasket looked good, pistons looked even as far as build up all the way across them, little cleaner on the 140 psi one. Plugs did not look oil fowled after 1 year of use on them infact I could still see a little white on the porslin tip on the 2 low PSI cylinders. They did have a little carbon fuss but I had run the tractor several times for just a miniute or two not allowing it to warm up befor taking it apart. It allways started good but it seemed the engine just spun to long when shut off and I could hear a bird sound out of the exsaust when running also. Mark H.

When you say 'takes a long time to stop turning when shut off' I think of two things. (1) Longer coast down than most tractors; normal for Perkins 3 cyl. gas engine due to heavy flyweel. (2) Dieseling; check for faulty, missing or disconnected shutoff solenoid at carburetor. I believe all these were so equipped from the factory. Big Dean could tell you for sure. The 135 Perkins gas is one of the sweetest tractors I've ever driven.

Yes longer coast down it has allways seemed longer than other engines I have had in the past. You might have a point there on the heavy flywheel. The exsaust valves were not seating right and I think that is why my compression was down it 2 cylinders. I washed the carbon off the top of the cylinders tonight and the ridge is even smaller now being clean. Small enought that I will just put the head back on. My oil pressure has allways been high and the little smoke was due to fuel not oil after it sat for a long time idleing I beleive. I have a lot of hours (9780+) on the engine but it run pretty good and may have been rebuilt once?? I do love this tractor out of the other ones I have owned (Sm Sizes)8Ns, 9Ns, TO-20s and TO-30s this has been the best of all! It is a keeper for me just the right size for what I need to do with it. Mark H.

Machine Shop said in two cylinders the exsaust valves wern't seating good and the are going to re/fase and seat them all. I can do a test with the old gasket just to see if the compression comes up befor I button the tractor up. Mark H.
