Hi folks.

Help me out here. I have a 55 massey harris diesel and one cylinder is missing and there is a oily like fluid coming out of the exhaust manifold where there appears to be a crack in the manifold. Blue smoke is relatively abundance. I posted a message to where one could find gaskets for these old rigs... in which I someone informed me of a great place...thanks again. What might appear to be the problem?

Thanks for your help

My MH50 (gas) also started blowing oil out the exhaust(I have a slight manifold leak). It also doesn't have as much power bush-hogging uphill. I came to this sight today see what I can learn. Any other ideas?

When you start it,does it seem to have equal compression on all 4 cylinders? Or does it seem to spin free over one cylinder? This would be bad exhaust valve. How much blowby out breather tube?Have you run it enough to tell if crankcase gets over full of oil? Bad or cracked rings on one cylinder.Which pump,APE,orPSB? Had APE pump on one that would miss at idle on one cylinder and pump fuel into the crankcase, but under a load would hit on all 4.Just some suggestions,Good luck!

It sounds like the compression is ok nothing unequal. When I try to increase the throttle, it trys to fire. THe cylinder in question is the cylinder closest to the rear. The oil level seems to have dropped by a quart within a hour of start up...idling speed. Pump ???
Thanks dan

Dan,
Sounds like you probably have cracked oil rings on that cylinder. APE pump is the one with injector lines in a row.PSB is the pump with lines kinda in a circle.Probably have to pull the head to see whats going on in there. Outside chance it could be terrible valve guides but still have to pull head.
Gaskets for 382 Continental still available,Victor or FelPro,not cheap though.A good engine shop should be able to fix you up.Good luck!

Could be several things, but I would pull the injectors out and have them all checked.Could be one with a stuck valve(not chattering and popping)

My 175 has oil coming out of the exhaust manifold and blue smoke. When I took the manifolds off (to replace gaskets) I could easily see oil dripping down the valve stems. Still runs good, but uses a quart of oil a day.

If your engine has overhead valves (I don't know) you may have a similar problem.
