Did it follow the 44? and how long was it built. How did it differ from the "44"? Was it followed by the 444? Thanks for the help--obviously I'm not a Massey expert!

You're not an expert but are perceptive. Yes to all questions. 44 had a 3 7/8 bore. 44 Special had a 4" bore. Both had 5 1/2" stroke. 44 horsepower was 47 on belt, Special had 50.3

The 44 special I saw recently has a long lever going straight up from ( believe) the transmission/final drive). Could this be an over- or over/under drive? Thanks for the help. You're both perceptive and knowledgeable.

If that lever is right in front of the brake pedals, it is the differential clutch that provides a form of "Live PTO".

The 44 Special had a longer frame ( I believe it used the 55 frame) than the 44 and also had full rear fenders. I am the proud owner of a 1955 44 Special that my Dad puchased new. It has over 10000 hrs and has only had the rings replaced and valves ground at about 4000 hrs. It's still as dependable as ever!
