Just finished restoring this tractor. New 6V battery, new type "0" cables, new ignition switch, starter motor rebuilt. Tractor has positive ground. New 6V coil, points and condenser. When you hit the starter switch, the engine turns over but only sometimes actually runs. Other times you can crank it till the battery wears down and still won't start. l'm wondering if it is flooding itself. There is a new carb kit in it. When you tow it, it starts in just the tractor length in third gear, then runs perfectly. Any one got any ideas what would cause this? Thanks

Years ago I ran my planer off a decrepit Massey Harris 30. It started very well except when the distributor bearings were out of whack. They were so worn that I would wiggle the whole unit until it felt right and then it would run again.

A quick tow would start it, as you say.

I'd love to have one of those tractors again.

We called it Stanley. Still remember Stanley's throaty bark on a hill: the muffler was a 2" aluminum pipe dropped down onto the manifold.

Did you know the radiator from a Dodge slant six would fit a Massey Harris? I used a series of them. Wood chips were a bit hard on radiators.

You say that you just finished restoring the tractor. Did you rebuild the engine? You describe something that is similar to low compression. Do a compression test on all four cylinders and let us know the results. I recently rebuilt a couple of tractors that had low compression until the rings seated - took 5 to 15 hours of use. In both case I had to pull to start until they had some time.

Coil polarity correct? The positive on the coil goes to the distributor.
