I have a 1956 MH50 that I use daily. Recently it has been surging when under load and hot. It does it mainly when going up hill or on a side slope. It acts like it's running out of gas. I notice when I shut it off last night that the sediment bowl had an air space at the top that filled slowly with gas. Any ideas how that air gets in there? I'm thinking the gas shut of valve has a bad seal and I should replace it.

One further note, I have never seen another MH50 and think this may be an unusual tractor. It says MF50 on the decal but that was put on by someone who restored it. The serial number plate clearly says MH50 and the serial number, SGM503692, is in the MH50 range for 1956. Anyone know if this is a rare machine?

The lack of fuel sounds like you may have some debris blocking the hole in the tank, or perhaps even a faulty valve on the bowl assembly. I would start by checking those two items, although if that was the only issue I would think you would notice the fuel starvation on any type of terrain once you've cranked up the engine RPMs.

Yes, when I crank to high rpm it does the same thing. We pulled the gas tank and cleaned it and pulled the filter bowl and cutoff valve. The valve seat was rotten and leaking air. I ordered one from an Ebay store in Wisconsin. Should get it on Tuesday and have everything back up and running.

Sounds like you may have found the issue. Good luck and let us know how she runs when you get her back together.

disregard the second comment about the rarity of an MH50. I just did a search of the archives and found plenty of them. What a great source this forum is.

The MH 50 is a very rare tractor. They were only made inbetween 1956-1957 until massey ferguson took over and it becuase the MF 50 and the color changed. Is yours the High Crop? If so i believe that is even more rare.
