Looking for help from anybody who knows about this model. My friends and I (FFA Chapter) are restoring a MF 65 diesel that was given to us. We ordered a new 2-pc. muffler set and it doesn't match the one that's on the tractor currently. The one we have goes straight up vertically. What they sent us will only fasten horizontally and run towards the rear. I started looking on the web for pictures of this model. Found 2 restorations with the stack going up, and 2 unrestored 65's that aren't clear enough pictures to see the pipe, but show no sign of it going upward. Even though our tractor's pipe/muffler looks to be old & original, we have to wonder if it was tampered with just because the owner preferred the vertical stack. Want to do this right. Would appreciate any help from anyone who has a moment to share on this subject.

Its all simple they come both ways. If there vertical in the air they catch limbs on trees, If horizontal down below they gas you when your changing implements. Have fun , Lou

Jay,

You have any kinfolks in Van Alystyne, Tx. between Dallas and Sherman? There is a Stamm equipment co there that sells Goodyear tires and used farm equipment.

Don't know of relation there. Think it's a fairly common name....some pronounce "Stam". Ours is German with short o sound like "Stom".

10-4. One of my hobbies is noticing the variations of certain names. I can almost see the immigrants standing in front of the customs agent on Ellis Island (for example), after a long trying trip from a foreign country, maybe fluent in the English language, maybe knowing nothing about it, giving their names.....lots of room for misinterpretation there from both sides.

I have a '61 & a '63. Both have the exhaust going down to the muffler under the clutch pedal & out the back.

My 1964 model 65 has the vertical muffler. Check it out here: >Link

I'm>Link pretty sure that's an aftermarket muffler. I saw a similar one at D&B Supply that would bolt right on.

I took a look in my MF65 operators manual and they list a vertical exhaust kit for the gas and diesel. The diesel has a u pipe that bolts to the manifold to turn the exhaust up for the vertical exit. It looks like they use the same muffler in both applications but I am not sure of that.

Dont know if it helps at all, but here in the UK virtually every tractor has a vertical exhaust, old and new. Even at shows horizantal ones are rare and some of the machinery there goes wayyyy back.
