Drove by farm other day. They have a MF 2745, factory cab, working heater, A/C "fan needs fixed" (and supposedly he's fixing it). Rubber looks good all way around, does NOT have dual rear tires. I belive it has 2 rear remotes, right at 2,500 or perhaps 2,800 hours, I forget which he said.

He has a Bush Hog 3715 Heavy Duty flex wing mower that they say was only used "a couple of times" to cut 75 acres. I've not seen the mower yet. I'm going to try to see all again this weekend & perhaps take some pics so can post here.

upshot, the tractor price is $9,500, presumably with the A/C fixed. The mower... this got me thinking...

he said "We called the dealer and it costs about (I forget) $12,000 (??) new and we want $10,000 for it"

So upshot, about $20,000 for this lawn mower that I can then use to cut about 125 acres instead of this STINKING 5' rotary we have on the back of a old, beat up International 444.

Sooooo o, any immediate thoughts or caveats?

Anything I need to look out for when I go back this weekend?

Evidently they bought it used. He says it was used for hay bailing (or so I THINK that's what he said, I was on another phone call when he called & I was distracted)

My gut feeling is he bought it all used and is trying to either make some $$ off me or at minimum recoup his initial $$. I can't say I blame him but since I'd be getting a loan for it I don't want to have it TOO unfair of a price.

Any thoughts are appreciated

Last comment: I've searched here and only found comments discussing how great the 10XX series are and how much less of a machine the 27XX series are with the transmission on this specific unit being the bad boy???

If the above is correct, is the transmission 'OK" after it's been fixed, or is it just an inherent design flaw that simply "doesnt work"??

I'm a working stiff like most here and am interested in the apparent price of the package but I can't really afford any major (and 'probable') "GOTCHAS" by paying too much for something that is a matter of WHEN, verses IF will break.

Thanks for any thoughts

We purchased a new 2745/24 speed, pile of junk. We were MF people before & after. Never will forget when we held off paying a payment on it because it was in shop once again. Let the MF Finance person scare us into paying. If we would have had access to the web back then 1984-5. Could have compiled alot of info to use in court.
But I don't know if the Lemon Law would of effected this or a judge ruled in our favor. Also didn't realize our credit was about to be shot due to enconomy anyway. Could have told him to stick that tractor where the "Sun don't shine".

This sounds familar to me, is this outfit in s. central Pa.? I have been told by a former MF mechanic to stay away from all 2000 seris MF's. No good, permanent fix to the transmissions.

This is in East Tennessee, private farmer. Also, the tractor has about 2030 hours on it instead of the amount I previously quoted

Here"s a "thought"(opinion) for what it"s worth. IF it has the 8 speed tranny and runs good, the price ($9500) is not out of line but slightly high. The BH stands on its own, maybe a little high. IF it has the 24 speed, the price is way high. I would hate to offer $15k for it and not want it. There are -many- tractors that will pull a 15" BH for a lot less $$ and "probably" give better service. I know a farmer that pulls a 15"BH with a MF 135, I kid you NOT! Now it"s over smooth pasture and not a mini forest so it can be done. I"ve owned and ran a MF 2805 and that"s what I"m basing my comments on. Even a 10" BH pulled by an older tractor would beat what your doing now.

Thank you sir!

For better/worse I AM on some decent hills (East Tennessee) so I actually like the idea of having a larger than recommended machine, rather than smaller or "just right" sized.. to be sure I"ll have stopping power when / if needed.

Speaking of stopping power (sigh) the only stopping power the IH 444 has is turning uphill but that"s an entirely different discussion.

:)

That"s how my friend stops that 135, he always turns uphill! I wad raised bush-hogging/mowing on steep hills, wheels at max spread, weights on front, low gear as possible, and we "rarely" went straight up or down. The 2745 is plenty heavy but I don"t like the "platform style" high center of gravity(with a cab) as opposed to the newer MF"s or the older 200 series. I would guess that any 70-100HP tractor would be sufficient for your needs, hills permitting.

Followup question if I may,

I just verified that this tractor is the powershift version, or I suppose, the 24 speed.

He CLAIMS that he's never had any problems, yada yada yada...

ok, here's my question: If this tractor ever did have issues with the transmission and they were fixed, were they FIXED or was the fix just a temporary patch?

What I mean is, is the design so inherently bad that the problem will remain even AFTER the 'fix' is done to it, or can the transmission issue genuinely be taken care of?

Thanks for any thoughts

I never knew if mine was "updated" or not and I kept it over 6 years w/o problems. From what I"ve been told the first couple of years of production had the most problems, afterwards the rate of failure went down, there was an "update" sold/fixed by the dealers. Today, the parts to fix are getting harder to come by and are very $$$$. I would have to have a mechanic that knew about big MF"s to cover this one with a fine-toothed comb before I would be interested. Have you searched/read ALL of the old messages here about the 2000 series trany problems? Some will give you a queasy feeling in the gut.
