My MF-35 Z134 burns up a lot of points. Do I need a resistor coil to cut the voltage down to the points or a in-line resistor? I"m probably not getting 25-30 hours out of a set. I looked at FENA"s wiring diagram and it"s right. I think the coil on it is a take out from some 12 volt. Thanks for any info. Fred OH

Hi Fred, Look to see if you have a ballast resistor on the positve side of the coil. Then measure the resistance across the coil with an ohm meter. You need a total of 2.7 to 3.5 ohms to keep the current through the points at an acceptable level. If it's in that range, then you don't need a ballast resistor, but if it's way less,(1.5 or less) you need one. An auto parts store should be able to get them. If not, they are listed in the Jeg's catalogue. www.jeg's.com.
Also a bad condenser could cause the points to burn by not absorbing the current when they open.
Also make sure the points are gapped right at 0.022".
You could eliminate them with a Pertronix electronic ignition kit. They are easy to install. I just did mine and it runs real good, and I thought it ran well with the points. Even better now. Genesee products sells them. Same coil resistance (3.5) for these too.

Randy...thanks for the quick info. I"ll check the coil resistance and see if I"m in the ballpark. I changed the condenser each time I put in new points, so I don"t think the problem is there. I think the points fit the TO-20/30 MF-35 if I remember correctly...probably find out they have a six volt condenser that the 12 volts is breaking down. I"m luckier than a Leprechon anyhow. Cheers, Fred OH

The MF manual specs says that the points are designed to switch 4-5 amperes of current. So 12.75v (fully charged batt) divided by max current (5a) is your needed minimum resistance. So if the ohmmeter doesn't read it in the coil, add it external as mentioned by Fred.

NAPA has what you want and it is a generic thing, just tell them how many ohms you need.

On the Petronix.

I just had one fail but it may have failed because the center wire in the dist had the end burnt off so the spark was having to do a big jump to get to the plugs. Wasn't on my tractor....one I sold.

My first problem with them and yes I really like them.....for $100. I got the 40,000 volt coil with mine. They definitely don't want more than 5 amperes to switch.....burned up another one trying to troubleshoot this tractor.....swapped coils in troubleshooting and failed to check that it had 3.5 ohms.....it only had 1.7 (after the fact) and that my man dat twernt enough....so I reinstalled the original points and cond that I originally took out and it's running fine.....so take it or leave it....but I'm $200 lighter.

Mark
