I recently bought a Massey 255 with the perkins diesel motor. The op. manual says to use 20W oil in the summer (30-90" temps). My local farm store had 1 bucket of store brand oil out of their 1000"s of cases of motor oil. What is everyone using? It sure can"t be 20W! I love the tractor but it has 1 annoying problem - the brake lock pops on every time I brake. Brake parts look pretty expensive on this model, is there supposed to be a spring on the lock that I"m missing to keep this from happening? Thanks

I am a maintenance supervisor for construction equipment for the rail road we use 15/40 multigrade in everything, In all my personal equipment I use Shell Rotella, and have had excellent results with it. Just my 2 cents, T.J.

I agree shell is best but walmart also has synthetic rotella 5w40 and this would be the best winter oil you could buy

Yes, there is a spring to stop that... or just wire it up until you get one. We have used 30W with good results in our "76 model. Where did they come up with 20w anyway?

Norgeman: I have the same brake problem on my MF265. When it locksup I have to put it in reverse for several feet and it unlocks itself. If you find out what the problem is I would appreciate you letting me know what the "fix" is.

ags1,
It doesn"t sound like you have his problem, backing up has no effect on the parking brake lock on a 255. Yours "may" be your differential lock is not releasing properly. If it only occurs after braking then you may have some adjustment issues. "Normally" the diff.lock is engaged by depressing the pedal near your right heel on a 255, the brakes aren"t connected to this pedal directly.

I agree with Rick, find your self some Shell Rotella 15W-40 diesel oil. I get mine at Wal-Mart. Very good stuff. Use it year round.

BTW, I'm using it on a MF50 w/3 cylinder Perkins Diesel.

Good luck,
Bill
