My 1965 MF135 gas w/145 Continental gas started to sputter and die out on my this past weekend. It starts and runs great until it gets warmed up, then it starts to sputter and sounds like the engine is going to quit. I took the air filter out and knocked the dust out of it, checked the glass fuel bowl and it looked pretty clean. Don't really know where to start looking to resolve this problem. I have the parts and maintenance books but don't really know where to start looking to diagnos the problem. This just started to happen over the last 5 days. I'm right at 100 hours after repairing some fire damage where I replaced plugs, wires, gauges, and re-treated the inside of the fuel tank, put on a new cap and put in a new battery. Can someone give me a starting point to start looking? thanks, JC

Make sure that your ignition system is up to snuff. taht means if you pull any plug wire, put a paper clip in it, hold it to a good ground and crank the engine. You should get a a nice, fat, bluish white spark. Yellowish or orange is not good. If you don't have a good spark, you need to make sure that your points are clean and adjusted properly and that you have the battery voltage at the coil. (I presume your electrical system doesn't use a ballast resistor.) You then need to check (and adjust if required) the timing and the firing order must be correct. If all that checks out, you need to check the fuel delivery. Make saure that you gas cap is vented and that the vent is clear of debris. If your carburetor has a big plug in the bottom, remove it and open up the tank valve and hold a container under it to catch the $2.25/gallon gas. You should have a big steady stream of fuel. If you don't, check the secret filter in the carburetor inlet fitting and the one in the sediment bowl. You need to have full supply of fuel available to the carb. If all that checks out, you'll need to take the carb off and make sure the float valve isn't stuck or plugged.
If all that checks out you'll need to check the adjustment on the carburetor.
The "how to" on all these checks is in the shop manual. Come back if you have questions.

I have the same identical tractor, and had the same problem, I put 8oz of "sea foam" in the gas(approximately 3 gallons of gas in tank) tank and enging started running good after a short time. Go ahead and clean the fuel bowl, it can't hurt, sometimes trash will hide itself well.
