It say's on the back of the bucket that it replaces manufactures recommended fluid. Tractors listed like fords, allis, massey ferguson etc. IS this true? i bought some at our local auto store because the tractor store is a 45min drive but now i'm afraid to use it because i would hate to damage the tractor. Thank you

I GUESS IF THE TRACTOR YOU ARE PUTTING THIS OIL IN DOES NOT HAVE A POWER SHIFT TRANNY OR WET BRAKES, I GUESS IT WOULD WORK. THESE GENERIC OILS, LIKE WARREN, COSTAL 303, WILL NOT WORK IN THIS APPLICATION, I HAVE SEEN THE EVIDENCE, AND BESIDES THE 303 WAS THE FIRST JOHN DEERE TRANNY/HYD OIL USED IN THE EARLEY 60'S. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR, AND BESIDES THE RIGHT OIL FROM MASSEY, DEERE, FORD, CASE IH DOES NOT COST THAT MUCH MORE. JUST MY TWO CENTS WORTH

I'd rely on the reputation of the dealer selling it. I buy all my fluid from my local auto parts jobbers and have never had a problem. If the equivalent specs are listed on the back, I don't worry about it. There are a lot of small refiners who make as good a product as the big boys. I mean they all hire chemical engineers who go to the same schools and read the same trade magazines and all.

But that's my choice. Others only use OEM fluid.

You're welcome.

Oil is about as varied topic as one can get on here but one thing is for sure. Massey or Deere or any of them don't refine oil. Oil refineries do and they refine it to meet certain specs provided to them by these OEM manufacturer's.

So if it meets the spec and the refinery isn't lieing to you (reputable) then how do we know that that isn't the refinery that puts John Deere on some containers and ships them to Deere?

We don't. (Closely guarded secrets)

Best,

Mark

But does it say,"meets or exceeds manufacturer's specifications"?If not,I would be very leery of it.There is a lot of less that trustworthy oils on the market. Most of the difference is in the additive package. That is what runs the price of good oil up and that is how you get short changed on cheap oils. The 303 is a hook. That is what the first Deere hydraulic/transmission oil was called.
