80W90 GL-1 vs. straight 90 GL-1 oils

I haven't been able to find a post that addressed this topic. I was going to put some straight 90 GL-1 mineral oil into my MF65, but then came across the posts mentioning the Shell Dentax, which comes in an 80W90 GL-1. Both are GL-1 so they will be fine, but is the Dentax truly a multi-viscosity oil or is this just a marketing gimic? I would prefer multiviscosity since I live in a colder climate and it would be better for the hydraulics, but I don't feel like paying the premium for the Shell product if it really isn't any different than the cheaper ones labelled as straight 90

I would not worry about it. I have straight 90wt. in my Mf65. Last winter in 15 deg F temps the hydraulics were slow at first but as they warmed up all worked fine.

IMHO

It is permissible to use 40 wt GL 1 when the temperature is consistently below freezing. You must switch back to the heavier oil in warm weather to prevent premature wear of the system though.

Don't recall the particulars as it didn't apply to me but I recall seeing in the Ford manuals a dilution method for gear lube in the winter....for those who have no access to 40wt GL-1....which I don't. Course I don't need to as I live in Texas....maybe that's why it's not available.....course what's the difference between that and 40wt non-detergent engine oil?
