A philosophical question

Howdy!

I have a MF 2135 (gas). It's the industrial version of the 135. Since it's the industrial version, it is yellow. The only difference (I'm told) besides the color is that it has a better front end (steering, axle, suspension).

My problem is that I really like the red and gray of the regular MF tractors. It seems like a classy color combination.

Would it be dishonest or detrimental it I repainted it gray and red? Would it be particularly harder than repainting it yellow? I'd be perfectly happy to retain the 2135 stickers and I'd tell anyone that it is supposed to be yellow.

It's not like this is a pressing question. it would be part of a rather thorough rebuild that it desperately needs but I can't afford.

Your opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Your tractor, effort, and paint. If any one asks, just tell the truth..... You like the utility colors better. Most people won't know the difference; but for the purist...go for it.

I saw one painted ag colours a couple years ago it looked very nice. Guys that know their machinery will pick it out right away. To most others it will be a nice MF. In most areas the ag tractor will bring more money when sold even though the Industrial has the better front end and powersteering setup. The only better made ag model is the Orchard Special 135 (I have one). It has Industrial non adjustable front end and Planetary rear axle/ disc brakes from the MF165/175 tractors

Hi,
Don't know if this applies to American made tractors. 'Industrial' tractors in the UK had two sets of brake shoes on each side. with much wider drums. If you have these then that's another difference.

As to painting. A local farmer-collector has an industrial 135 which he has repainted in red and gray. It looks very good but in no way can he hide or has he tried to, the fact that it was once yellow.

It also depends on how much work you want to put in on the preperation. Unless everything is rubbed down and preferably primered the red will come off in time and leave it looking a bit spotty, which as mentioned is down to how far you wish to go.

Cheers

DavidP

A question for you.... in reply to Tom G (OK), 06-27-2005 16:29:23
Are you going to enter it into a Best restoration for accuracy contest?

If your answer is no, then paint it purple, green, seafoam, what ever you like.

I recently acquired what was billed as a 135 but I suspect it is a 2135. The yellow is showing through where the gray is flaking off. It has power steering, shuttle shift, etc. I plan on keeping it red and gray but wouldn"t mind changing out the 135 emblem with a 2135. Does anyone know where to get a set?
