Sorry guys, I am a Ford guy (and new to that as well). My FIL obtained this tractor and we are trying to identify it, and see if parts are still available to fix it up. From some help on the 9N/2N/8N board, they say it looks like a Massey - so I figured you guys would know for sure. Thanks for any help you can give me.

The S/N is on the plate on the side back by the drivers area, or stamped into the top of the rear end cover under the seat area. It may be covered with years of grime, so some scraping will be needed. That will tell a lot about the tractor. Good luck.

Well, it's either a massey Harris 20 or 81 but from the look of the grill I would go with the 20, I have a 20 tore apart waiting to get around to getting around to picking up the clutch and new seals and getting her bach together, it's a good find, don't part it out restore it, not too many of the massey 20 or 81's for that matter around, it should have a f-124 contentintal engine in it, forgive the spelling just got back from Iowa and was up at the folks today working on the hay mower...Look ontop on the transmition and try to see if the serial number info is stamped on there, should be there some place, on the 44 we have it's by the pto lever by the clutch pedal..

Just a thought, never looked at a mustang that close, but think they look similar to a 20 or 81

Looks like a Massey 20 to me.Probably a 1946 or 1947 model. The original muffler hole is still in the hood. When those dog legs from the manifold went bad ,most people just cut a new hole in the hood and put a piece of water pipe in the manifold like the one in the picture. Got a serial number on it? Look under the tractor for frame casting dates to narrow the model and year down.Yes, lots of certain parts are still available.

There was a oblong brass taf secured to the frame on the left side towards the drivers area, but I could not make out the numbers on a quick inspection. Would this be the serial number location?

Thanks,
Dan

Should be the tag.Sometimes you can smear some black paint on those tags and wipe off the excess. The paint will stay in the stamped numbers.

What do you mean by a flat bottomed support beam? If the front frame is a cast-iron tub then it will be a MH 101 or 102 Junior (they had the 4-cylinder Continentals). If the front frame is pressed channel iron, then it might be something like the 81/82 or the later 20/22 models. Those were very similar to each other. Somehow I think it has the front channel frame from what I see in the photo. Easy tractors to work on since the whole engine/clutch assembly lifts right out without splitting the tractor. Those engines were 3 sizes (same block), 124, 140 and 162 cubic inches. Same engine that were on countless numbers of Lincoln Welders over the years and lots of other agricultural and industrial applications.

it is a massey harris. it's a 101 jr. or 102 jr. check the gearshifter. if it has a gear marked B, it's also a twinpower. it was a way of changing the belt pulley speed to make more belt power at a lower rpm. i have one just like it, a 102 jr. twinpower. they were pretty common in their day, and are still around, if you know where to look. the engine is a continental f162. hope this helps

All the Massey 101 pics I have seen do not have a flat bottom support beam, they are scalloped and curved in like the top of the hood. This bottom beam is flat, kinda like a 81.

Thanks,
Dan

It looks like an early '40's Massey Harris. I'd guess on Model 81, if I had to nail it down. See Nebraska Test # 376.
