Hello, I have a gas 1972 mf135. I was recently racking hay with a 3ph. pto driven rake, at a little more then an idle in 2nd hi. When my engine suddenly almost stalled under what seemed like a heavy load. I quickly stepped on the clutch and the engine returned to normal, but when I tried to release the clutch it would lug the engine but not move. Tried in netral with same problem engine would stall when clutch was released, although the tractor could be rolled forward easily. The shifting levers all seem to be actuating properly. So I am not sure what is happening. Any insight as to what the problem might be would be appeciated.

Thankyou
mike

i have a mf-202 that did the same thing, only i was using a york rake.I had a problem where the 3 pt. hitch stalled tractor. it happened just like that,i had no control on the float for the rake it lifted all the way up and i had to take off the inspection plate and found the 2 fingers were wedged together good luck.

Since you say "Tried in netral with same problem engine would stall when clutch was released, although the tractor could be rolled forward easily" it does not sound to me like the transmission stuck in 2 gears at once. If the trans was stuck in 2 gears the tractor should not roll forword easily. Sounds more like the PTO system is stuck. Let us know what you find.

The fact that it happened while going along makes me wonder whether it could be a hydraulic pump/PTO problem. If you have a dual clutch see whether you can run with the transmission stage disconnected but PTO running. If you can it's a transmission fault, if not it could be the pump/PTO.
Assuming it is transmission, can you still select all the gears on the stick? If not perhaps a detent spring has failed and allowed the selector to move. Have you had any trouble with jumping out of gear? There is a known problem with the shift tower pin wearing, allowing the gearstick to twist and engage two gears at once, but I've never come across this happening while driving along.

Had a Ford SOS (automatic transmission) do that to me once. As your post is titled, the gears in the transmission tried to mesh two gears simultaneously.

Popping the cover and looking over the shift fork tips may provide some insight. A sloppy shift because of a worn shift fork tip might do it. Also the pivot bearing where the shifter pivots may have unnecessary slop.

Thanks, I just thought it very stange that the tractor could jump into two gears while I was in motion and had been driving at a steady pace for at least an half hour.

Man I tell you. That sort of thing happens to me daily. Try to understand root cause but some are really vague.

Hi all, thanks for responding. I had phone line problems which stopped me from getting on the internet so I was not able to responed till now. All levers seem to be moving as normal including the pto lever. but I think the person who thougt it may be in the pto system may have something there. I have been planing to overhual the engine in the fall, so this tractor may be sitting till then when I will start working on it. any more insight into this problem would be appeciated.
Thanks, Mike
