I bought this 175D around the first of the year and the fuel gauge worked but started
getting weird and has finally stopped working. Let me give a little back ground
on this pup. The fellow I bought it from had re-wired it because something
shorted out and he fried the regulator. He didn't want to buy a regulator so he
put an alternator with a built-in regulator on it and re-wired the tractor to
suit. He still had the orig. alternator so I put it back on and bought a voltage
regulator from the local auto parts store and re-wired the tractor to the
wiring diag. in the owners manual and Bid Dean's CD. The fuel gauge worked
after that with no problems for a few months. It them would work off and on and
now has stopped completely. I have checked out the oil pressure switch and it seems
to be working properly. I then went to the gauge circuit. I disconnected the leads
to and from the unit and started testing. On the lead to the sending unit I am
getting continuity to battery ground with a resistance of 83 ohm, On the guage
itself I get continuity across the terminals with a resistance of 118 ohm. On
the lesd from the regulator that goes to the gauge with the engine running, I
get only .014 volts. Now I'm not much of an electrical person but, that voltage
doesn't look right to me. Has my regulator gone bad and causing the problem? Are
there any other tests I can do to run down the problem?

Your Problem is probably the tank sending unit that is what it is about 90 percent of the time. Hook the wires back to the fuel gauge start the tractor so the oil pressure switch will turn on. Using a test light clip the wire to a good ground then touch the test light probe to the fuel gauge terminal the wire from the oil pressure switch connects to. This way you will be sure you have fire going to the fuel gauge. After you know you have fire going to the gauge. Then touch the test light probe to the fuel gauge terminal that the wire from the tank sending unit connects to. The gauge should show full. If it does show full then your tank sending unit is bad. If the fuel gauge does not show full then your gauge is bad. That is how we checked them at the dealership.

Big Dean..from what you said above, the power to the gauge comes directly from the oil pressure switch? That's not what the wireing diagrams show. They show the power to the guage coming from terminal number 4 on the voltage regulator.

That is right the oil pressure switch excites the voltage regulator when the voltage regulator is excited the number 4 terminal became live to operate the fuel gauge. the wire for the fuel gauge does connect to that terminal. When I said that it was to check to be sure the switch was exciting the regulator for the fuel gauge to have fire.
